Renfe finaliza instalación de sistemas de videovigilancia inteligente en estaciones de Cercanías de Asturias.

Renfe has completed the first phase of the RS3 project (Renfe Smart Security Station) with the installation of intelligent video surveillance equipment in 33 stations in the Cercanías de Asturias network. Among these stations are Avilés de Renfe conventional and AM, Oviedo, Pola de Siero, Lugones, Lugo de Llanera, El Berrón, Mieres and Mieres Puente, El Entrego, Sama, or Pravia.

In total, 415 stations throughout Spain already have this intelligent security system. This first stage of the project has involved an investment of 25.8 million euros, which is part of the European Union’s NextGenerationUE Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

For this year, Renfe plans to carry out a second phase of the RS3 project, which will start next March, to put into operation advanced security installations in 182 more stations.

Thus, this project will culminate by mid-2026, completing the installation of intelligent video surveillance in 597 stations in the 12 Cercanías and Rodalies networks existing throughout the national territory. The investment planned for this second phase is 6.5 million euros, also financed with NextGenerationUE funds.

DIGITALIZATION OF SECURITY SYSTEMS

One of the objectives of the RS3 project is the digitalization of station security systems (anti-intrusion systems, access control systems, cameras, and CCTV system recorders), as well as the installation of network management systems and centralization of the main elements that make up the station security system.

With these improvements, a greater sense of security is achieved for the traveler, while updating security systems that were obsolete. The new system allows remote monitoring of all installed security systems and improves the quality of the images received by Renfe’s 24-hour Security Centers, which can be used to investigate incidents of various kinds that occur at stations.

Thanks to this intelligent security system, it will be possible to detect in real-time, through the analysis of footfall, maximum capacities, and crowding at stations, which will allow for more personnel to be directed to stations as needed at any given time. But not only that, it also allows for the detection and analysis of fraud in access control, falls of individuals on platforms or tracks, as well as fires or acts of vandalism such as graffiti or damage to furniture.

Through the analysis of criminal behaviors, the system can detect fights and assaults. These analytics generate real-time alarms at Renfe’s 24-Hour Security Centers.
