Alegría reproaches those of Feijóo who always say ‘no’ to the proposals of the Executive, even if they benefit the citizen
MADRID, 25 (EUROPA PRESS)
The Government spokesperson, Pilar Alegría, considers it «inexplicable» that the Popular Party would vote against the forgiveness of debt to the autonomous communities because, in her view, it benefits all citizens and accuses those of Alberto Núñez Feijóo of playing territorial grievance and pitting one community against another.
During the press conference following this Tuesday’s Council of Ministers at La Moncloa, Alegría stated that it would be inexplicable if the autonomous communities governed by the PP voted against this measure –a forgiveness of 83,000 million euros in total– at the Fiscal and Financial Policy Council (CPFF) this Wednesday.
The PP opposes it because it stems from an agreement between the PSOE and ERC, announced the day before by Oriol Junqueras, through which the central Government assumes around 17,000 million euros of Catalonia’s debt after both parties agreed to it for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez.
Subsequently, the Government has extended this agreement to the rest of the communities without negotiating with them, and for Feijóo, it is «an unfair trap» that benefits the communities that have spent more and raised more taxes, and he anticipates that his communities will oppose it.
«No matter what measures are put on the table, no matter if those measures improve the economic situation of the autonomous communities and benefit the citizens of the different autonomous communities, because the Popular Party will always vote no if it is a measure proposed by the Government of Spain,» reproached the spokesperson, while also calling on the main opposition party to show «responsibility.»
CONDEMN OR FORGIVE
Therefore, the spokesperson demands that Feijóo clarify whether he is «for forgiving or condemning» the citizens, including those of his own communities, who, according to the Government, can «improve their financial situation» and allocate those resources to improve public services.
«And does the Popular Party say no?» she questions, describing as «a series of far-fetched excuses» the reasons given by Feijóo for not supporting «a good measure that benefits the citizens.»
In that sense, she argues that the PP has changed its stance on this issue and has cited statements from the Andalusian Minister of Finance from November 2023 –when the debt forgiveness agreement with ERC for Pedro Sánchez’s investiture was announced– in which she said she would accept debt forgiveness for her community if it exceeded 17,000 million euros.
«Yesterday, February 24, when this autonomous community knows that its debt relief is 18,791,» she rejected the proposal, considering it a «trap» and «a tailored suit for Catalonia,» she criticized.
«VICTIMHOOD CAMPAIGN» BY AYUSO
In similar terms, the Minister for Digital Transformation, Óscar López, who was also present at the press conference, expressed himself when asked about a possible grievance to the Community of Madrid, which would be forgiven 8,644 million euros, a significantly lower figure than that of Catalonia and Andalusia.
López, who is also the leader of the Madrid Socialists, defended the measure and accused the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, of launching «an absurd victimhood campaign» by claiming that Madrid is being harmed.
«I would love to be harmed by having my mortgage forgiven. If harming Madrid means forgiving it 8,644 million euros and, therefore, the savings in interest payments that entails, please harm me every day,» he exclaimed. «If that is harming, let God come and see it,» he concluded.
