The team from Colegio Salesiano Santo Ángel will represent the Avilés Science and Technology Park ‘Isla de la Innovación’ in the final of the competition «Innovative proposals for sustainable development challenges», which is taking place in Málaga as the closing event of the 7th edition of ‘Science and Technology in Female’. Accompanied by the Councilor of Urban and Economic Development, Manuel Campa; Aurora Palacio, Paula Rodríguez, and Carlota González will present their project ‘BOSQUI’, an assistant robot for special needs individuals.
Among the 21 proposals submitted by technology parks in Spain, ‘BOSQUI’ was selected as a finalist along with Colegio Regina Carmeli from València Parc Tecnològic and IES Bovalar from Espaitec Parc Científic i Tecnològic de la Universitat Jaume I de Castelló.
‘BOSQUI’ is a robot that not only assists but also saves lives, an intelligent assistant designed to accompany individuals with special needs, providing them with support in their daily lives. Furthermore, this project represents a step towards employment inclusion, as it provides advice, answers questions, and ensures security, ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to develop professionally.
In this seventh edition of the Science and Technology in Female project, third-grade secondary school students from seven schools in Avilés (IES Carreño Miranda, La Luz, La Magdalena, Menéndez Pidal, and Nº 5, as well as San Fernando and Salesiano Santo Ángel Schools) participated. With a total of 595 students -305 women- setting a record attendance. Out of all participants, 61 were invited to participate in the Avilés Hackathon 2024, held last December, forming 23 teams led by women. The team from Colegio Salesiano Santo Ángel emerged victorious, earning the right to represent the Avilés Science and Technology Park ‘Isla de la Innovación’ in the Spanish final.
At tomorrow’s closing event, the main results of this edition will be presented, where the 21 participating science and technology parks organized a total of 38 sessions to showcase and promote studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It will also feature a roundtable discussion on leadership, entrepreneurship, and STEAM vocations, bringing together representatives of initiatives committed to these goals within the Málaga TechPark ecosystem. Additionally, the event will include an inspiring presentation by María García Puyol, a software engineer in artificial intelligence at Google Cloud, who will share her professional experience. The event will culminate with the awarding of prizes to the winning team.
In recent years, Avilés has been a finalist three times with IES Carreño Miranda, once with IES Número 5, and was the Spanish Champion in 2020 with Colegio Santo Ángel.
The program «Science and Technology in Female» aims to promote the study of scientific and technological disciplines among female youth. With this initiative, the Avilés City Council, through the Science and Technology Park ‘Avilés Isla de la Innovación’, has been involved in a fight to reduce the persistent gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers.
