On March 21, 2025, the park of Ferrera became the setting for the celebration of World Tree Day, as part of the Avilés Verde program. Eulen Group, the municipal contractor for green area maintenance, distributed chestnut seedlings to the residents of Avilés who visited the information point set up, providing them with the necessary requirements for planting to ensure optimal growth of the specimens.
In addition to sharing information about this day, the green areas of Avilés, and the trees present in them, key aspects for the proper conservation of these spaces, such as rules for pet stay and walks, were also discussed.
Through the celebration of Tree Day, the Avilés City Council aims to highlight the importance of protecting forests and the invaluable role that trees and vegetation play in both natural environments and cities.
Urban tree cover helps reduce temperature by reducing energy consumption and the «heat island» effect in urban areas. Additionally, they improve air quality by absorbing CO2 and pollutants, benefiting public health and mitigating global warming.
The presence of trees and vegetation in urban environments provides food, habitat, and shelter for local biodiversity. They also ensure a supply of drinking water and protect infrastructure from heavy rains, floods, and soil erosion. Furthermore, green spaces help prevent numerous diseases.
Avilés Verde is a municipal program designed to promote environmental awareness and education in the city. It aims to raise awareness about green area maintenance, rational resource use, and proper waste management.
With this project, the goal is to showcase and enhance the city’s parks and gardens, engaging users in green spaces.
As part of Tree Day, the Councilor for the Environment, Pelayo García, announced plans to implement a tree monitoring campaign for trees distributed to the public for planting. This initiative aims to track their progress annually post-planting.
The councilor encourages families, especially children, to sponsor a tree and find a location to plant and care for it, integrating it into their vision of a more sustainable society.
