Three third-year ESO students from the Salesian School Santo Ángel have triumphed this morning in the final of the contest «Innovative proposals to the challenges for sustainable development,» held in Malaga as the closing of the 7th edition of ‘Science and Technology in Female’. This is the second time that the center has received this prestigious recognition, having also won in the 2020 edition.

The team formed by Aurora Palacio, Paula Rodríguez, and Carlota González, led by their teacher Sara Isabel García Barón, stood out with their proposal, surpassing the Regina Carmeli School of València Parc Tecnològic and the Bovalar IES of Espaitec Parc Científic i Tecnològic of the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, who had also reached the final phase of the contest.

The Councilor for Urban and Economic Development, Manuel Campa, enthusiastically celebrated this new milestone: «It has been intense work on their part because the competition was significant. In Avilés, all public institutes participate, in addition to the Santo Ángel School and San Fernando. And that first filter, I believe, is the most important part in order to reach this final phase that they shared with students from Valencia and Castellón. Delighted that once again we have been recognized with this first prize in the ‘Science and Technology in Female’ program.»

Their project, called ‘BOSQUI’ in homage to Don Bosco, the founder of the Salesians, is an innovative robot designed not only to assist but also to save lives. It is an intelligent assistant designed to accompany people with special needs, providing them support in their daily lives. Furthermore, this project represents a step towards labor inclusion, as it advises, answers questions, and provides security, ensuring that all people have the opportunity to develop professionally.

The «Science and Technology in Female» program is aimed at promoting the study of scientific and technological disciplines among young female audiences. In this regard, Campa emphasized that awards like this «must serve us to continue promoting university vocations and professional training studies in science and technology because we are very clear that the jobs of the future in our city, in our region, also in our region, go through these types of studies, through these types of trained people and still today the gender gap is significant. Only in the technological field, the average of female students is 8%, in the scientific field, it is slightly higher, but even so, we must not cease in the effort for this gap to continue to be corrected, to close. Therefore, programs like this must serve not only for those who have participated but for the rest of the students in Avilés and our region, so that they can see themselves reflected in these successes and can think about accessing these types of studies that are very important for the future.»

In recent years, Avilés has been a finalist three times with the Carreño Miranda IES, once with the Number 5 IES, and has been the Spanish Champion in two editions: in 2020 and again in 2025, on both occasions with the Santo Ángel School.

With this initiative, the Avilés City Council, through the Scientific and Technological Park ‘Avilés Island of Innovation’, has been involved in a fight to reduce the persistent gender gap in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
