On March 7, 2025
Their project is called ‘BOSQUI’, an assistant robot for people with special needs that also saves lives
The councilor for Urban and Economic Development, Manuel Campa, presented on Friday the team formed by Aurora Palacio, Paula Rodríguez, and Carlota González, students from Colegio Salesianos Santo Ángel, winners of the Avilés Hackathon 2024, within the framework of the Science and Technology in Female project.
With the support of an explanatory video, two of the students (Paula Rodríguez couldn’t attend) presented their project BOSQUI to the media, an intelligent assistant robot designed to accompany people with special needs, providing them with support in their daily lives.
Furthermore, this project represents a step towards labor inclusion, as it advises, answers questions, and provides security, ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to develop professionally.
This project will represent Avilés in the final of the national competition «Innovative Proposals for Sustainable Development Challenges» organized by the Association of Scientific and Technological Parks of Spain, which will take place on April 24 in Málaga, as the closing of the 7th edition of Science and Technology in Female. In recent years, Avilés has been a finalist three times with IES Carreño Miranda, once with IES Número 5, and was the Champion of Spain in 2020 with Colegio Santo Ángel.
In this seventh edition of the Science and Technology in Female project, students from the third year of Secondary Education from seven centers in Avilés participated (IES Carreño Miranda, La Luz, La Magdalena, Menéndez Pidal, Nº 5, as well as the San Fernando and Salesianos-Santo Ángel Schools). With 595 participants (305 women), a record attendance was achieved. Out of all participants, 61 (38 women) were invited to participate in the Avilés Hackathon 2024, held last December, forming 23 teams led by women. The team formed by Aurora Palacio, Carlota González, and Paula Rodríguez emerged as the winners.
The program «Science and Technology in Female» is aimed at promoting the study of scientific and technological disciplines among young female audiences. Through this initiative, the Avilés City Council, through the Technological Scientific Park ‘Avilés Isla de la Innovación’, has been involved for years in a fight to reduce the persistent gender gap in careers related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
