Reconocimiento al Real Oviedo Femenino por el Día Internacional de la Mujer

The plenary hall of the Oviedo City Council has hosted this morning the institutional event of the Oviedo City Council on the occasion of March 8th, International Women’s Day. The event, led by the Mayor, Alfredo Canteli, has been a recognition of Real Oviedo Femenino and, as highlighted by the Councilor for Social Policies, María Velasco, «to all the women who, with their effort and dedication, have contributed to transforming our society. Under the motto «OVIEDO WITH EQUALITY AND RESPECT: WOMEN WHO TRANSFORM THE WORLD,» the campaign we have designed reflects fundamental values such as Symbol, Action, Leadership, Transformation, Growth, Commitment, Destiny, and Strength. These are the characteristics that define women who break barriers, challenge norms, and lead strongly in all areas of life. From mothers and grandmothers to politicians, engineers, or domestic workers, each of us, day by day, transforms the world. It is a moment to celebrate the progress we have made, but also to remember that there is still a long way to go.»

From the Oviedo City Council, the councilor emphasized, «we continue to work on raising awareness and education on equality and respect because we firmly believe that equality is not just a right, but a shared responsibility. Today, more than ever, we must commit to preserving and defending the rights we have conquered over more than a century. Equality is an objective that requires the collaboration of everyone. Women transform the world. This transformation is not exclusive to the female gender; it must be accompanied by the participation of all men, young people, and children; and, together, we must commit to continue moving towards a future where equality and respect are a reality. Today we want to pay tribute to a group of women who, with their daily action and struggle, are an example of effort, work, professionalization, involvement, and progress. Real Oviedo Femenino is a team that not only plays soccer but also inspires new generations to dream big and fight for their goals: 45 years of trajectory, passion, and play. 45 years in which you have experienced many experiences, some good, others half good, and others bad. But these last ones have not made you give up on the effort. That is why today, you deserve this recognition. Girls, you are an example for all of society, especially for all the girls and young women in this municipality. With your work and effort, you are carrying out a project that goes beyond soccer and you are achieving goals that we once thought were impossible.»

The Mayor, Don Alfredo Canteli, has presented the recognition of this March 8th to Real Oviedo Femenino, received by Doña Gabriela Martínez, Commercial Director of Grupo Pachuca; María Suárez, General Director of the club; Andrea Suárez, coach of Real Oviedo Femenino; and Ana Buceta, a player, a silhouette of La Regenta, now that 140 years have passed since the publication of the second most important novel in Spanish literature, the distinguished work of our adopted Son, Leopoldo Alas Clarín.

The General Director of Real Oviedo Femenino, María Suárez, has thanked this recognition «which is possible thanks to all the people I have before me (…) That is why I also want to take this opportunity to address those of you who make this club transcend through your social, feminist, and above all human commitment (…) You are a pride and for this club, you are an intangible of incalculable value. You make the Real Oviedo brand great. You make this city great. And of course, you make women’s soccer great. As female athletes and as a club, we have a social responsibility that goes beyond winning.»

Suárez has reflected on the reason why this «work environment based on the respect and equality that this city deserves has been conquered. I think it is because I am surrounded by women who inspire, all of you, and by men who believe in women, all of you (…) Our door will always be open to this city, to its institutions, to its people, and, of course, to all those women and girls who may need to feel supported at some point. This, Real Oviedo Femenino, is the team of everyone, but above all, it is the team of all of them.»

The event concluded with the intervention, on behalf of all the boys and girls of PIOVI (Oviedo’s Childhood and Adolescence Plan), by Alejandra Hevia, facilitator of the groups that make it up, summarizing several examples of women who transform the world.
