RADAR will focus its programming for the second quarter of 2025 on European cinema, joining the candidacy of Oviedo for European Capital of Culture. Under the title «History(ies) of European Cinema,» a cycle that began in the 11th edition of the Oviedo Contemporary Audiovisual Week (SACO), the selection includes iconic titles from directors such as Lars von Trier, Fritz Lang, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Win Wenders. The Municipal Culture Foundation maintains cooperation with other regional and international cultural entities that enrich the film offerings in Oviedo, so this quarter RADAR will collaborate with Ava Arts Foundation, Institut Français, Alliance Française de Oviedo, and the LGTBI Festival at the Niemeyer Center.

The program includes 25 films to be shown at the Teatro Filarmónica and the Teatro Casino de Trubia. The new installment of RADAR will begin on April 3 with Fritz Lang’s first sound film, «M el vampiro de Düsseldorf,» and will conclude on June 29 with «Yo capitán,» Matteo Garrone’s latest film. These are two of the films in the cycle «History(ies) of European Cinema,» which will also include a tribute to the late actor Gene Hackman, two films by Polish director Wojciech Jerzy Has in collaboration with Ava Arts Foundation for his centenary, and titles from American masters like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, both recipients of the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts.

In addition to the aforementioned, the «History(ies) of European Cinema» cycle includes essential titles from directors like Lars von Trier («Melancholia»), Pier Paolo Pasolini («Teorema»), Win Wenders («El amigo americano,» «Perfect Days»), René Clément («A pleno sol»), Luchino Visconti («Obsesión»), and H.G. Clouzot («El salario del miedo»), the latter in collaboration with Alliance Française and Institut Français.

Oviedo is one of the Spanish cities where a showcase of Wojciech Jerzy Has’ films will be exhibited on the occasion of his centenary. Ava Arts Foundation is responsible for offering the first retrospective of the Polish director in Spain. This quarter, the Oviedo audience will be able to see «Los adioses» (May 15) and «Cómo ser amada» (June 5), with digitally restored copies and new subtitles. Jerzy Has is one of the most original Polish filmmakers, the author of the mythical «El manuscrito encontrado en Zaragoza» (1964), a cult film that captivated Luis Buñuel, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola. This cycle is supported by the Polish Cultural Institute, Filmoteka Narodowa Instytut Audiowizualny (FINA), and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute (IAM), and is co-financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (Cultural Promotion Fund) and the Polish Film Institute.

As part of RADAR’s special focus on contemporary cinema, this installment will feature acclaimed and award-winning films from recent years, with awards from Cannes, Berlin, Seville, and Valladolid, such as «La zona de interés» by Jonathan Glazer, «Bárbara» by Christian Petzold, «Sister» by Ursula Meier, «Siempre nos quedará mañana» by Paola Cortellesi, «La isla de Bergman» by Mia Hansen-Løve, «El amor de Andrea» by Manuel Martín Cuenca, «Las cuatro hijas» by Kaouther Ben Hania, and «Sala de profesores» by Ilker Çatak.

Gene Hackman, with a career spanning over four decades, received two Oscars, two British Academy Film Awards, and four Golden Globes. RADAR pays tribute to him with two of his most acclaimed films: Coppola’s «La conversación,» which the director considers his best work, and William Friedkin’s «The French Connection,» for which he received his first Oscar, as well as a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.

RADAR will return to Trubia one Tuesday a month (19:00). The Teatro Casino will host three titles, starting with Wenders’ «Perfect Days» on April 8, awarded at Cannes and nominated for an Oscar. On May 13, the audience can enjoy an emblematic work of French polar cinema: René Clémet’s «A pleno sol.» And on June 3, «El cebo,» a Spanish-Swiss co-production by Ladislao Vajda inspired by «M, el vampiro de Düsseldorf.»

RADAR is a free activity: admission is free until full capacity is reached. The schedule at the Teatro Filarmónica is Thursdays at 20:00 and Sundays at 19:00.
