"Camino a La Meca" is a play written by the South African Athol Fugard, considered one of the most relevant contemporary English-language playwrights, based on a true story, that of a misunderstood South African sculptor who achieves her own freedom in the darkest times of apartheid.
Tolcachir explains that in this new production, the author Athol Fugard is inspired by a real woman, Helen Martins, who rebelled against all the institutions of her time. A being who pursues desire, the light of inspiration that does not correspond to any age or generation. Someone who prefers questions to certainties, who values her freedom and autonomy by facing her time and the world around her.
When putting it on stage, he confesses that he heard "Lola’s [Herrera] voice beating in every text." "One of the main reasons I find to join a project is to know, or intuit, that it will be an opportunity to meet and share experiences with people who will move me forever. I was very fortunate in my life to have the affection and complicity of immense artists. Sources of inspiration. I fell in love with Lola Herrera encounter after encounter. Fascinated by her charisma, moved by her lucidity, amazed by her curiosity and desire," acknowledges Tolcachir, who is also the author of the version.
"Camino a la Meca" is a perfect opportunity to once again enjoy Herrera and Dicenta together, in a production by Jesús Cimarro and Pentación Espectáculos, with set design by Alessio Meloni, costumes by Pablo Menor, lighting by Juan Gómez-Cornejo, and with María García de Oteyza as assistant director.
