The vice president of the Principality, Gimena Llamedo, has advocated this Saturday in Santander for strengthening the confidence and empowerment of women to break the «glass ceilings» during her speech at the open meeting ‘A Cantabria in equality’ organized by the PSOE of Cantabria within the framework of its XV Congress at the Paraninfo of the University of Cantabria.
Llamedo has emphasized the progress made but also pointed out that «there is still a long way to go to achieve real equality.» Among other aspects, she has highlighted how the gender pay gap is one of the clear inequalities towards women.
She has also mentioned the unequal distribution of caregiving responsibilities and the lack of co-responsibility, despite progress being made with measures such as maternity and paternity leave, as well as the inequality in pensions and the lack of female representation in public and private power spaces.
«We still need more female role models,» she stated, arguing that when responsibilities are offered to women, they have to face the «lack of self-esteem or confidence.» «We still need to take more steps and empower ourselves,» she asserts.
Llamedo has also pointed out that parties like Vox show their rejection of equality agents, equality tables, and social concertation. In this regard, she has criticized that «it’s not just that they don’t care, but they don’t want to move towards equality in any area.»
Furthermore, the vice president of the Asturian government has highlighted the renewal of the State Pact against Gender Violence and calls for unity, hand in hand with the feminist movement, to work on equality from an early age, emphasizing the commitment of the Asturian government to co-education.
Overall, she has warned of the risk of «denialism» and expressed concern about government agreements with denialist parties.
