Inicio de instalación de nuevos contenedores de recogida de materia orgánica en Avilés con material reciclado

The Avilés City Council initiates the installation of a hundred new organic waste collection containers made from recycled material on April 3, 2025. This initiative is co-financed by the funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

The new containers are being installed in various areas of the city, including El Quirinal, El Nodo, La Villa (Zone 3); La Maruca, Jardín de Cantos, La Carriona, El Alfaraz (Zone 4); and the historic center (Zone 5). In this first phase, 107 containers will be replaced with new ones equipped with personalized card-operated locks to improve accessibility and mechanical features, enhancing their functionality and maintenance.

The installation will begin with the locks in an open state, and the distribution of the corresponding opening cards will start in two weeks. Users in the specified areas can request these cards at the Urbaser waste collection and cleaning service offices located on Calle Cabruñana, 44, during the following hours:
– Monday to Friday: 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
– Saturdays: 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Additionally, from May 19 to 25, an informative campaign will take place in public areas where users can also collect the opening cards. The containers are expected to be closed in July, and users will be duly informed of the date.

These new containers are made from 52% recycled material, are 100% recyclable, and adhere to the ISO 14006 ECODESIGN standard, ensuring environmental impact control from manufacturing to final recycling. Between 2022 and January 2025, 46.7 tons of material from retired containers were recycled to produce the new ones being placed on the streets.

The contract involves supplying 215 containers of 2,000 liters to expand the organic waste container distribution on the streets and 220 containers of 240 liters for large generators such as hospitality or commerce. Valued at 486,978.78 euros, the contract is co-financed by the funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, following a resolution from the Regional Ministry of Autonomous Administration, Environment, and Climate Change in November 2022. This resolution allocated public subsidies to local entities in Asturias for projects related to the separate collection of biowaste for specific biological treatment facilities, funded through the Waste Regulations Support Plan within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
