El PSOE demanda medidas urgentes para mejorar gestión de residuos no convencionales en Oviedo.

The PSOE of Oviedo has demanded that the municipal government "provide explanations and take immediate measures to solve the precarious situation of unconventional waste collection in the municipality". To this end, they have submitted a series of questions to the Plenary Commission on Urban Planning, Infrastructure, and Basic Services.

As explained by the party in a press release this Sunday, they did so through their spokesperson, Carlos Fernández Llaneza, who requested "precise information on the actions taken to comply with the plenary mandate approved in December 2023", which urged the government to find new locations to expand the number of clean points in Oviedo "as soon as possible".

"More than a year after that agreement, the situation has not only not improved, but has been worsened by Cogersa’s decision to close its clean point for companies and self-employed individuals located in the Espíritu Santo industrial estate, due to the municipality’s inability to provide a new plot," argued Llaneza.

In this regard, the spokesperson pointed out that, although the waste management consortium "granted a six-month extension to prevent immediate harm to users, the PP government has let almost five months of that period go by without announcing any progress".

Clean Points in Oviedo

Currently, Oviedo only has one clean point, "a clearly insufficient number compared to cities of similar or smaller size, such as Gijón, which has four," Llaneza argued, also noting that the creation of new clean points "would not entail any cost to the municipal coffers," as Cogersa would fully cover the expenses of acquiring and conditioning the plots.

In addition, the socialist spokesperson emphasized that this is not just a matter of convenience for citizens, but "an unavoidable environmental commitment." "Oviedo must seriously commit to responsible waste management, promoting suitable spaces for the collection of unconventional waste from both individuals and business activities" to prevent the "proliferation of illegal landfills," he added.
