The director of the Valgrande-Pajares Winter Station, Javier Martínez Iglesias, stated on Tuesday during his appearance at the General Assembly, at the request of Vox, that since 2019 he warned the Government of the Principality about the lack of qualification and the employment situation of the head of operation of the ski resort.
«The Asturian government is aware and complicit in this, although it has not provided any solutions,» the director said, adding that he has had to hold the position of head of operation «non-stop for seven years because the other head of operation was either on sick leave, compensated leave, vacation, union matters, family care, attending courses, or legal proceedings.»
He also emphasized that the head of operation he had to replace «completely lacks the qualifications and training required by European cable transport regulations,» despite being «the person ultimately responsible for ensuring the safety of workers and users.»
«Starting up a ski resort is not just pressing a button to make it run smoothly; it requires making a series of decisions and risk assessments. This statement is not just mine as the facility director, but two external companies tasked with auditing the facility also confirm it in their reports,» he pointed out.
Likewise, he wanted to stress the safety guarantee of the station. «As the station director, if at any point I believed the station lacked safety, I assure you I would not allow it to open,» he asserted, further stating that «it is mandatory for the head of operation to be on-site. It cannot be done remotely. Therefore, to open, there must be a head of operation, a role I have covered,» he emphasized.
Finally, the videoconference appearance requested by Vox of Gregorio Clemente Pérez, a representative of the engineering firm I+C, was not authorized «due to lack of motivation.» This was related to a report stating that the head of operation has «little to no knowledge of the operation and typology of the facilities,» as well as «limited knowledge of preventive maintenance plans, corrective maintenance tasks, and fault repair,» among other serious deficiencies of this winter station manager.
The commission also addressed, among other matters, the state of the Historical Mining Complex of Llumeres, in Bañugues, located in the municipality of Gozón, at the initiative of the Mixed Group parliamentarian, Covadonga Tomé.
Minister Vanessa Gutiérrez responded to the parliamentarian that the next meeting of the permanent commission of the Cultural Heritage Council, to be held this week, will discuss the possibility of taking measures to ensure the preservation of this historical industrial complex «in the same conditions, at least, as it was when protected in 2008.» Therefore, an assessment of the current state of the complex will be conducted to propose necessary actions «for its preservation and enhancement.»
Additionally, the Minister of Culture informed the Mixto-Foro deputy, Adrián Pumares, that the Asturian government had informed the family of the Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, Severo Ochoa, of the efforts made to acquire, for 70,000 euros, the private correspondence between him and his wife, Carmen García Cobián.
