The exhibition was a result of the collaboration agreement between the Avilés City Council and the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, held at the CMAE and the Casa de Cultura.

The exhibition «La sonrisa estética. Artistas avilesinos en las colecciones del Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias» was a resounding success, attracting almost 19,000 visitors (18,578) since its opening on November 15, 2024, until its closure on March 30.

Curated by Ramón Rodríguez, the exhibition showcased a selection of 62 works by 32 artists, from Octavio Bellmunt (1845) to Soledad Córdoba (1977). It highlighted the contribution of Avilés artists to the art history of Asturias, focusing on the golden age of local art (1921-1934) and their more recent representations.

Ramón Rodríguez, the exhibition’s curator and a featured artist, emphasized the significance of showcasing all Avilés artists with works in the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, except for Carreño de Miranda, as an opportunity for the people of Avilés to appreciate the historical and contemporary artists from various art movements.

The exhibition brought together the names of notable artists such as Juan Carreño de Miranda, Maruja Mallo, Octavio Bellmunt y Traver, and many more, showcasing the diverse styles and techniques of Avilés artists throughout history.

Yolanda Alonso, the Councilor of Culture, highlighted the importance placed by the Avilés City Council on exhibitions, supporting both established and emerging artists. The city boasts five municipal exhibition spaces and supports creators through artistic production grants via the Factoría Cultural.
