The Rescue Group of Firefighters of Asturias and the Emergency Service of the Principality of Asturias (SEPA) carried out four interventions in the Asturian mountains this morning, including helicopter evacuations and a search for a missing hiker.
Asturias Firefighters, aboard the SEPA’s medicalized helicopter, transported two hikers aged 57 and 49 to the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) after a fall from a cliff about 20 meters high on the Las Foces del Río Pendón route in Nava.
The Urgent Medical Care Service (SAMU) reported that the 57-year-old injured hiker was in serious condition, while the second hiker was out of danger.
The Emergency Coordination Center of 112 Asturias received the call at 12:44, reporting that both hikers were injured next to the river and with no road access to the area.
The SEPA’s 112 Room immediately mobilized the Rescue Group, which includes a doctor-rescuer, using the medicalized helicopter. SAMU and the Civil Guard were also informed.
At 13:18, the team located the two injured hikers. The most serious one was evacuated first, followed by the second hiker, who was admitted to HUCA at 15:57.
EVACUATION IN ONÍS
While the Asturias Firefighters Rescue Group was involved in rescuing the two injured hikers on the Las Foces del Río Pendón route in Nava, the SEPA’s 112 Room received a new call at 14:05 from the Vega de Ario refuge in Onís.
According to SEPA, a 70-year-old man with a leg injury was at the refuge, so the Emergency Coordination Center activated another SEPA multifunction helicopter with a member of the Rescue Group. SAMU was also notified.
The team accessed the refuge and evacuated the affected individual to the Asturias Firefighters helibase in the Cangas de Onís park. There, the Cangas de Onís Primary Care team and the basic life support ambulance from the area, already activated by SAMU, were waiting to transport him to the Arriondas Hospital.
SEARCH FOR A MISSING HIKER
While the rescue operations in Nava and Onís were ongoing, 112 Asturias received a third call at 15:04 from the Vega de Ario refuge.
As reported, a group doing the Jitu pass to Vega de Ario route had arrived at the facilities and noticed the absence of one of its members, a 32-year-old man.
In response to the alert, the Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) took over the search to locate the missing hiker.
WOMAN ILL IN CABRALES
In addition to the interventions already carried out, the 112 Asturias Emergency Coordination Center received another call at 15:35 regarding an incident that occurred at 13:35 on the La Rumiada trail, about 20 meters from Poncebos in the Cabrales municipality.
The call reported that a woman in her 70s felt unwell while hiking.
To address this emergency, the Asturias Firefighters Rescue Group was activated, as they were finishing the evacuation of the second injured hiker in Nava at that time. The team reported at 16:54 that they had arrived at the location and were assisting the affected woman.
At 17:40, the Rescue Group with the SEPA’s medicalized helicopter informed 112 of the transfer of the woman who felt unwell to the Arriondas Hospital.
