Members of the Rescue Group of Asturias Firefighters, aboard the medicalized helicopter of the Emergency Service of the Principality of Asturias (SEPA), have rescued a 29-year-old climber from Valladolid who suffered a fall while climbing the fifth pitch of the east face of Picu Urriellu, Picos de Europa (Cabrales).
The affected person had a possible fracture of the tibia and fibula and has been evacuated to the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), as reported by the SEPA in a press release.
The Emergency Coordination Center received the call at 2:15 p.m. The call explained that they were on the Vía Amistad con el Diablo and his partner had fallen.
The rescue team was immediately mobilized aboard the medicalized aircraft. Once in the area, the rescue of both climbers began. The task was complex, as both were extracted through crane operations, due to the difficult access and windy conditions of the location.
The uninjured woman was transferred to Vega de Urriellu where she had her belongings, and then the injured man was evacuated to HUCA. The rescue team completed the intervention upon their arrival at base, at 5:06 p.m.
