Oviedo is already preparing for the celebration of the fifth edition of «Alfonso II, El Primer Peregrino». A cultural and touristic event that will take place from July 10th to 14th, with the novelty of concentrating activities in the Plaza de la Catedral, the location where Alfonso II built the primitive temple to San Salvador.
The program, which was presented this morning by the Tourism Councilor, Alfredo García Quintana, the president of Hostelry of Spain and OTEA, José Luis Álvarez Almeida and Marga LLano, responsible of Birmania Producciones, will include concerts, children’s workshops, the Alfonsina Pilgrimage, and the grand theatrical representation of «El Primer Peregrino» (Saturday, July 12th at 10:00 pm), among other surprises.
The councilor wanted to emphasize that the event «framed within the activity of Oviedo Origin of the Camino (…) that we want to turn into the city’s brand identity, values the figure of Alfonso II the Castro». This fifth edition, Quintana continued, «coincides, in addition, with two important anniversaries: the 950th anniversary of the opening of the Holy Ark and the tenth anniversary of the declaration of the Primitive Way as Intangible Heritage of Unesco».
On this occasion, the event will start on Thursday, a day when the Simultaneous Pouring has been rescheduled to commemorate World Cider Day and where «everyone, both residents and tourists, are invited to participate. Our goal is for visitors to immerse themselves in our culture, learn how to pour our cider declared Intangible Heritage of UNESCO,» Álvarez Almeida emphasized. The meeting is at 7:30 pm in the Plaza de la Catedral. The cultural program of «Alfonso II, El Primer Peregrino» will also coincide with the celebration of the Gastronomic Days of the Tortos del Camino, which can be enjoyed from July 4th to 13th in 21 hospitality establishments in the city.
As highlighted by Marga LLano, the program of this fifth edition is designed for everyone to «return to that Oviedo of Alfonso, to discover how its people lived, what they ate, how they dressed, how they cured their illnesses thanks to the collaboration of the Recreation group of La Guardia, the foremost experts within the recreation groups in Spain at this specific time of the kingdom of Asturias, led by our colleague Pelayo Mejido. In addition, there will be a playful part, as we have every year, with activities for families and young people, and an artistic-cultural program, composed of music, theater, and gastronomy, as mentioned before.»
Among the activities, LLano highlighted Saturday as «the main event day» with the grand show of the Primer Peregrino whose main role will once again be played by Ramón Langa. He will be accompanied on stage by some of the best actors in Asturias such as Alberto Rodríguez, Carlos Mesa, Félix Corcuera, Pablo Martín, Pepe Mieres, Tania Vázquez de la Cruz, or Yasmina Castaño. Among the musical program, there will be «very good Asturian musicians, musicians from the localities of the Camino, among others, David Varela, Seis Riales, and Los Gascones.»
