The Department of Rural and Agricultural Policy has found the body of a brown bear in a rugged and difficult-to-access area known as the penona de Xalón, in the municipality of Cangas del Narcea.
The animal’s body was located this morning after receiving a citizen’s report, as reported by the Principality in a press release this Thursday. The location was confirmed by environmental agents from the Principality, members of the Bear Patrol, and personnel from the nursery in the Fuentes del Narcea area, who traveled to the location with the support of a drone.
According to initial observations, the bear may have accidentally fallen down a slippery and humid slope, possibly following a trail during the mating season. The fall, which occurred in a steep area, would have caused fatal injuries to the animal.
The bear’s body will be transferred to the Wildlife Recovery Center in Sobrescobio, where a necropsy will be performed.
Rural Affairs has reminded the public of the importance of «exercising caution» in natural environments and «not interfering» with the dynamics of wildlife to preserve both safety and the conservation of this protected species.
