Martínez Salvador claims that this planning is «the only one that seems possible»
The citizen platform ‘Un Pulmón para el Solarón’ has expressed this Friday its «deep disappointment» at what it considers a lack of «firm» commitment on the part of Foro in the creation of a large park in the Plan de Vías area.
«There will be citizen mobilization against this barbarity that seems to take us back to the 70s of the last century, with the urban policy of developmentalism, instead of designing a city of the future, open, modern, and sustainable,» they have advanced.
This was indicated, through a press release, after having held a meeting today with the Councilor for Urban Planning, Jesús Martínez Salvador, to analyze the development of the urban plans planned for the ‘Solarón’.
In the eyes of the citizen platform, far from prioritizing the creation of a park, the current project continues to favor the construction of large towers: one the height of the current Bankunión tower and several of 16 stories, among others.
In this sense, they have drawn attention to the fact that there will be 1,200 luxury homes, inaccessible to the majority of the population that continues to have great difficulties in accessing housing with the current price escalation.
«These constructions will not help control housing prices, but quite the opposite, they have warned, predicting that they will end up being converted into second homes or tourist apartments that will promote a touristified city, where it will be increasingly «more expensive and more difficult to live.»
At the same time, they have warned that the tall buildings that are planned to be built will cast shadows over the current homes and surrounding streets.
«The reality is that the project seems like another joke,» they have stated. «It lacks defined deadlines, budget, and financing, a toast to the sun like the rest of the projects presented for the past 23 years,» they added from the citizen platform.
For them, with the current design, the railway barrier will continue to divide the neighborhoods of the city. They have also added that nothing is known about the intermodal station project.
For all these reasons, ‘Un Pulmón para el Solarón’ has demanded that the municipal government fulfill its electoral commitment and act decisively so that ADIF and the Ministry of Transport reduce the planned building volume in the area and agree to create a large park in the center of the city.
«Foro cannot pretend to hide its responsibility behind the ministry, passing the buck, it must defend the city’s interests against the rest of the administrations,» they encouraged, before reproaching that decisions about the future of a key space for the city are being made without consulting the population.
Against this, they have defended a sustainable city model that prioritizes the well-being of its inhabitants over speculative interests. «We do not accept the blackmail that railway integration in the city depends on the sale of public land,» they have made clear.
«THE ONLY POSSIBLE»
From the local government, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Jesús Martínez Salvador, in statements sent by the Gijón City Council at the end of the aforementioned meeting, has emphasized that the Ministry of Transport is not willing to give up «a single square meter of building volume.»
For this reason, he has argued that, although it is not the one that the City Council would design, it is «the only one that seems possible.» He explained, related to this, that the green areas are increased from 32,000 square meters in the Junquera plan to 56,000 square meters, that is, 75 percent more.
Furthermore, he highlighted that this green area of the ‘Solarón’, together with the Moreda park, will make this space the second largest green area in all of Gijón.
