Mañueco recibe a sindicatos de León que solicitan plan estratégico para la provincia

The next Monday is scheduled for a meeting with union leaders in the capital of León.

The President of the Junta, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, met with the union leaders from UGT, CCOO, USO, and CGT in León, who expressed the need to address a strategic plan for the province and analyze the "threats" it faces.

Fernández Mañueco met with the unions at the Cortes of Castilla y León, where a plenary session is taking place. During the meeting, the head of the regional government expressed the commitment of the Junta to the province in response to UPL spokesperson Luis Mariano Santos.

After this intervention, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco met with the general secretary of Comisiones Obreras in the province, Elena Blasco Martín; the provincial secretary of UGT, Enrique Reguero; Jesús López from CGT; and Fernando Abella from USO.

Elena Blasco mentioned that they were considering having a "small" meeting with the president before the one scheduled for Monday, April 14th, at the Territorial Delegation of the Junta in León.

The head of Comisiones Obreras described the meeting as "quite interesting" as it allowed them to start outlining the lines they want to work on and prepare for Monday. They discussed the opportunities León has, as well as the threats, and therefore, the strategic lines they should design to address all the needs.

Blasco emphasized the need to "correct" a "structural crisis" that is clearly identified in the province of León. She recalled the demands made during the February 16th demonstration in the capital of León, where thousands of people called for an "emergency plan for public investment" focusing on four areas: employment, infrastructure, reindustrialization, and public services.

Enrique Reguero expressed a similar sentiment, thanking the Unión del Pueblo Leonés for the invitation to attend the plenary session, which allowed for the meeting with the president and several councilors.

The UGT representative explained that they analyzed the situation after the fourth demonstration in León and realized that "the future, the economic and social development of the province of León is not the most appropriate."

"We understand that León needs to be recognized, that both the Junta’s government and other governments acknowledge that León has a problem, and from there, we start working," he added.

ANALYZING INVESTMENTS

Reguero described the meeting as "pleasant," with the interest of presenting proposals on the 14th, focusing on identifying potential projects and investments. They also discussed the need to coordinate with the Spanish government and ensure some administrative decentralization from the Junta to León and other provinces.

He also addressed the issue of public services, particularly healthcare, referring to the recent demonstration for public health in Valladolid on March 15th, where platforms and unions from all provinces demanded similar improvements.

In the case of León, he highlighted the neglect of rural areas, with health centers closing, a shortage of oncologists in El Bierzo, and a hospital that was supposed to be built in Villablino but ended up as a health center with few doctors.

Therefore, urgent action is needed, especially in education in rural areas, which have suffered greatly from the closure of mines and power plants, leading to a significant population decline and a lack of essential services.

Enrique Reguero reiterated the urgent need for a specific and concrete action plan to address the issues faced by mining regions in the midst of the structural crisis affecting León.

He warned of the continuous neglect of these regions over the years, resulting in desolate areas that push individuals to take precarious jobs in unsafe conditions, as seen in Cerredo, where people risk their lives due to the lack of proper safety measures.
