Los autobuses, excepto escolares y de Emtusa, no pueden girar en Munuza si hay un solo carril

It is proposed to eliminate a pedestrian crossing and install traffic lights in the rest of that area

The councilor of Urban and Rural Infrastructures of Gijón, Gilberto Villoria, has announced this Wednesday that, in view of the reports of the pilot project of changes in the circulation of Calle Los Moros and its surroundings, the decision on the project to be carried out will be taken across the board by the local Government.

«Gijón not only has drivers, Gijón also has pedestrians who walk on inaccessible and dangerous sidewalks,» he responded in the Municipal Plenary, in response to a question from Vox.

According to Villoria, the report from the Local Police indicates that buses have «serious difficulties» in making the turn from Calle San Bernardo to Munuza, as they cannot open enough on Calle Domínguez Gil. He has specified that the buses that have the most difficulty in making the turn are not the Emtusa vehicles, which do it with «relative ease,» nor those dedicated to school transportation, but those driven by drivers who do not usually frequent the area.

For this reason, it is proposed to limit access from Calle Menéndez Pelayo only to Emtusa buses and school transportation.

Villoria also indicated that the moments of greatest traffic congestion coincide with the entry and exit of the San Lorenzo and Santo Ángel schools, in the half-hour period around 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

He also pointed out that another circumstance that has caused traffic jams is the pedestrian crossings located on Calle Munuza, especially the one at the beginning at its confluence with Calle San Bernardo, for which they propose its removal and the installation of traffic lights for the rest.

Regarding the report from the Mobility Service, the solution of a single platform is not considered appropriate due to the average hourly traffic intensity, 735 vehicles per hour on San Bernardo and 625 vehicles per hour on Munuza, during peak traffic hours, as well as the high flow of public transportation vehicles.

On the other hand, the main problem identified is the turn from San Bernardo to Munuza, where the geometry forces vehicles longer than ten meters to use all the available space between curbs.

From Mobility, it is also considered necessary to install traffic lights at the five existing pedestrian crossings on Calle Munuza. It is also proposed to maintain the turn from Munuza to Calle de los Moros, moving the pedestrian crossing and, finally, concluding that increasing the width of the sidewalks in this area under study is «essential.»

As for the report from Public Works, it is proposed to adapt the design of the street to the limitations and restrictions imposed by the dimensions of these and the traffic circumstances they generate.

For this purpose, it is considered that when designing Calle Munuza, alignments and sections should be defined for the section between San Bernardo and La Merced, where the expansion of the sidewalks will be limited, and other alignments for the remaining section, where there will be fewer restrictions in widening the sidewalks, allowing for a four-meter-wide traffic lane and 2.30-meter-wide sidewalks.

On the other hand, given the average daily traffic intensity, it is proposed to maintain the difference in elevation between the sidewalk and the roadway, ruling out the single platform solution.

PLAZA DE LOS FRESNOS

On another topic, during the Plenary session, Villoria accepted a request from Podemos to carry out the renovation of Plaza de Los Fresnos, in front of the shopping center of the same name.

In this regard, he pointed out that this square, with more than 23,600 square meters, is currently «degraded and obsolete,» so its renovation is considered «essential.» For this reason, the drafting of the project will be commissioned, with a budget for 2026, and a land use plan will be drawn up, with the input from the residents and users of the area.

NAVAL AZUL

On the other hand, the councilor of Urbanism, Jesús Martínez Salvador, in response to IU, confirmed that the City Council is considering establishing a participation mechanism for the planning of the Naval Azul area.

He explained that they are still defining how it will be, but in any case, it must be formal, have sufficient political and technical representation from the City Council, and have dimensions that allow it to successfully fulfill the functions entrusted to it.

In any case, he pointed out that they aim to have it ready at the same time as the drafting of the Special Plan for the Interior Reform of these lands.
