On January 30, 2025, a center will be established in Aviles that will open with a degree in medical assistance. In collaboration with the Local Council of Avilés, the Nebrija Institute of Spanish will be implemented.
The University of Nebrija will be implemented in Avilés through an annex center of the Nebrija Institutes, which will start teaching in medical assistance. The implementation will begin as soon as administrative efforts initiated with the government of Asturias are completed, if possible, in the next academic year 2025-2026.
By virtue of an agreement with the city of Avilés, the Center will also offer the Nebrija Institute of Spanish, which starting from the summer of 2025 can teach Spanish as a foreign language and intercultural skills to students, professionals, and companies.
Nebrija has reached an agreement with the Municipal Council to be located in the Palacio de Camposagrado, once the Higher School of Art in Asturias moved to the Main Park of the Asturias Building (PEPA 1 and 2) activated for this purpose. In the meantime, academic activities will take place at the Casa de Domingo ÁceBal, in the area known as the extension of the Conservatory, and in the MQA space.
The Mayor of Avilés, Mariví Monteserín, expressed how this important agreement will be a key boost for Aviles’ attraction as a city strategy. «I must show my deep gratitude to the University of Nebrija for their commitment. They understood who we are and what we want, our belief that training and innovation involve the only possible way in our development. Nebrija complements health studies in Asturias and opens up to explore other paths that converge with our interests, such as Spanish studies for foreigners, which align with Aviles’ open vocation, of which we are very proud.»
The Rector of the University of Nebrija, José Muñiz, was very pleased with the institution’s arrival in Avilés: «As an Asturian, I am very happy to share with my fellow nationals a positive academic project for Asturias, inspired by Nebrija’s values of Academic Rigor, Curiosity, Passion for Knowledge, and Excellence. It is wonderful news for us to be able to have Nebrija graduates trained in professional and personal excellence in Avilés.»
Diploma in Medical Assistance in Aviles
The degree in medical assistance will offer 90 places in two groups, although it will be a progressive implementation until the final location of Camposagrado. The Center will have its own teaching, research, and management team, which will be gradually hired.
Nebrija offers a personalized teaching and learning experience, a close relationship with the professional reality throughout the career, and comprehensive training that includes values and skills. Like the Madrid campus, a scholarship program based on academic performance will be activated.
The University of Nebrija has already started discussions with the SESPA Foundation and AVILES Hospital to ensure internships for its students.
The institution is open to incorporating other degrees and teachings in the future, depending on the needs of Asturian society.
Spanish as a Foreign Language and Intercultural Skills
Nebrija supports Avilés’ vocation to become a place for immersion in the Spanish language, materialized in an agreement to have the Spanish Institute in this project. Pilar Alcover, the director of the Institute, explains the proposal: «We are confident that this center will be a great boost for the internationalization of the city of Avilés and will promote the arrival of students from very different countries, which will stimulate cultural, social, and economic exchange. Additionally, training in intercultural skills and specific courses for professionals and companies will be offered.»
