Two sculptures are installed in the Plaza de España, and the Centro de Servicios Universitarios hosted a talk with prominent female athletes.

Avilés is hosting the first national tour of The Menina from the World Football Summit, which has become a symbol of commitment to equality and female leadership in football, traveling through Asturias bringing together prominent female athletes from Asturias and Spain.

The Menina WFS, representing the values of equality, resilience, and leadership, was presented today at the Centro de Servicios Universitarios in Avilés in an institutional event with the participation of the Sports Councillor, Juan Carlos Guerrero; Nuria Rodríguez, Director General of Citizen Participation, Transparency, Sexual Diversity, and LGBTI; and the President of the Royal Football Federation of the Principality of Asturias, José Ramón Cuetos Lobo. They were accompanied by a group of female athletes.

Juan Carlos Guerrero emphasized that «the City Council is a reference in equality policies,» highlighting the «transversal» nature of the involvement of all councilors in equality issues, not just from the Equality department, whose councilor, Lucía Fernández Ron, also attended the event of The Menina from the World Football Summit.

Nuria Rodríguez highlighted that Asturias is «a pioneer» in defending equality between men and women in all aspects, especially in sports, an activity that has always been promoted from the Principality.

The event was attended by boys and girls aged 10 to 14 years, who had the opportunity to ask the athletes about their activities and anecdotes, fostering a conversation among local female role models about their professional future and the importance of sports for children to build their personality.

The celebration of The Menina WFS, which also includes the presence of high representatives of national and regional competitions and federations, aims to promote messages such as female leadership in sports or the importance of exercise for women’s health.

At the Centro de Servicios Universitarios, a talk was held under the title ‘What do I think of my future?’ with the participation of Avilés boxer Sara Montoya; Lorena Arbesuk, president of the Club Deportivo Escuela Gimnasia Rítmica Valoe; and Alba Vázquez, a motorsport pilot. Each one shared their sports career in a talk led by Nacho Tuñón from the Asturian Football Federation.

The tour, in addition to the talk, is accompanied by the installation of two figures of the Meninas WFS, two female footballers inspired by Velázquez’s work representing the values of equality, resilience, and leadership, which will be present until February 27 in the Plaza de España.

With the support of this initiative, the Avilés City Council reinforces its commitment to gender equality in sports, providing role models for the new generations and promoting the growth of women’s football in the city and region.
