«La Lazarilla», a female vision of «El Lazarillo de Tormes», national premiere at the Teatro Palacio Valdés

A key novel of the Spanish Golden Age filtered through the lens of theater with a female perspective. This is «La Lazarilla», the national premiere that closes the performances of the quarter at escenAvilés. Lázaro becomes Lázara in this version of «El Lazarillo de Tormes», which will be shown the day after tomorrow, Friday, June 27, at the Teatro Palacio Valdés at 8:00 p.m.
This is a non-subscription performance, tickets are available for purchase through the usual channels, the websites www.teatropalaciovaldes.es and www.unientradas.es, and at the box office of the Casa de Cultura, as well as at the Theater on Friday, an hour before the show starts. Prices range from 12 to 22 euros.
The presentation was made by Yolanda Alonso, Councilor of Culture of the Avilés City Council, accompanied by the director of the play, Carla Nyman, and the two leading actresses, Soledad Mallol and Pepa Pedroche.
The play is based on the following premise: two mature actresses ask the author Eduardo Galán to write an adaptation of a classic for them. The author comes up with nothing better than adapting «El Lazarillo de Tormes» for them, which triggers a series of amusing events while they carry out the general rehearsal of the play.
Because what if instead of a beggar boy, the story had been about a poor girl? Soledad Mallol plays Lazarilla and Pepa Pedroche plays the male characters of the blind man, the cleric, the gentleman, Lázara’s husband, and the archpriest of San Salvador.
The play retains the most amusing adventures of the classic, a social satire comedy full of irony and cruel humor that emphasizes the parallelism between the beggar children of that era and the actresses who are begging for a character for themselves. The audience, while laughing with Lázara (Lázaro), reflects on the society of then and now, where rogues were and are abundant.
Eduardo Galán explains that «writing theater is playing with possibilities and fiction. What if instead of…? What if the anonymous author of El Lazarillo de Tormes had been a woman and not a man? What if the adventures we know of Lázaro were actually the adventures of Lázara, a beggar girl? Were there no poor girls in the 16th century populating the cities and towns of that time? Wouldn’t there have been any girl who had been given as a servant and guide to a blind man? What would happen if we told the story from a woman’s perspective?»
