On March 31, 2025, the Factoría Cultural de Avilés will commemorate the European Artisan Days with a comprehensive program that will take place on Thursday, April 3, and Friday, April 4. The program includes guided tours, conferences, and workshops.
The first activity will be a guided tour of the exhibition «Traditional Ceramics: Beauty and Function» on Thursday, April 3, led by Orlando Morán, a teacher at the Municipal School of Ceramics in Avilés, at 5:00 p.m.
On the same day, archaeologist Manuel Busto Zapico, a Ph.D. from the University of Oviedo and Bologna, will give a lecture titled «Imported Ceramics in Asturias between the 13th and 18th centuries: An Archaeological Analysis» at 7:00 p.m.
During the lecture, a detailed study of the commercial networks and consumption patterns of ceramics in Asturias over five centuries will be presented. By studying over 3,000 ceramic pieces, it will be revealed how this region, despite its peripheral nature, actively participated in European and Atlantic trade routes.
Additionally, a book will be presented that traces the evolution of ceramic imports from medieval French ceramics to modern productions from Seville, Talavera, Portugal, and the Netherlands. It also explores social transformations through everyday objects, highlighting the role of ceramics in domestic life. This work not only contributes significantly to the knowledge of historical ceramics but also invites readers to understand the history of Asturias through materiality.
Zapico is an archaeologist specializing in medieval and post-medieval ceramic studies. He is a member of the PRINMA Research Group (Production, Exchange, and Materiality) at the University of Granada and has published numerous works in prestigious academic journals. He has been awarded the VII Barbón de Faro for his knowledge of Asturian culture and promotion of Faruca pottery. His work reflects a multidisciplinary approach, combining archaeology, archaeometry, historical analysis, and digital humanities.
Workshops will also be held as part of the program. The first practical workshop, «Glazed Faro Ceramics: Origin, Shapes, and Decorative Techniques,» will take place on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m.
On Friday morning, Pablo Hugo Rozada, a teacher at the Municipal School of Ceramics, will lead a workshop on «Chawan Teapot» at 10:30 a.m.
