Coinciding with the commemoration of World Poetry Day, the words of the founder of contemporary American poetry, Walt Whitman, will resonate at the Teatro Palacio Valdés. They will be voiced by Juan Diego Botto and Nur Levi in their show «Leaves of Grass.» This Sunday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m., at escenAvilés.

Non-subscription performance, the last tickets are available for purchase at the usual channels, the websites www.teatropalaciovaldes.es and www.unientradas.es, and the box office of the Casa de Cultura, as well as at the theater on the day of the performance, two hours before. Prices range from 12 to 22 euros.

Juan Diego Botto directs and co-writes the script with Alejandro Pelayo, who is also responsible for the musical composition and performing live on the piano, accompanying with his music the interpretation of a poetry collection turned into a theatrical show reflecting on essential life themes.

Through the reading of Walt Whitman’s poems and the original music composed by Alejandro Pelayo, the audience delves into the historical context and social background of the poet. A writer highly influenced by deism, who denied that any faith was more important than another and embraced all religions equally. A skeptical religious man who believed that the human soul is immortal and in a state of constant and progressive development.

The music composed for this poetry recital is a blend of scents from the southern United States, the blues of the Mississippi, and the sound of the piano from New Orleans, with a more French and European touch. A time of transition from the 19th to the 20th century, a period of social and cultural change in all aspects.

As the company, La Rota producciones, puts it, «if there is something we need in turbulent times like the ones we are living in, it is a language that brings us back to tranquility, pause, reflection. We need metaphors, symbolic weight in words, in short, we need poetry.»
