The deadline for submitting candidatures to the Memory Council will open on April 2, as announced this Sunday by the Vice Minister of Citizen Rights, Beatriz González Prieto, who has encouraged memorialist associations to propose their representatives in the new body with which progress is being made in the implementation of Decree 14/2023 that develops Law 1/2019 of the Principality of Asturias, for the recovery of democratic memory.
Prieto highlighted the «fundamental role» that these organizations have played in maintaining democratic memory, in whose objective one more step is now taken to continue «on the path of truth, justice, and reparation.»
She explained that significant progress has already been made in the implementation of the Memory Law of Asturias through the development of the aforementioned decree, thanks to the establishment of the Memory Institute, the signing of the agreement with the University of Oviedo, or the contracts for the identification of victims via DNA or for the digitization of the El Ferrol archives.
With the opening of this call, one of the pending aspects for the start-up of this body is closed. «On April 2, the deadline opens for memorialist associations to request to be part of the Memory Council, which is one of the main participation bodies that we want to develop in Asturias,» explained Prieto.
The objective, according to the Vice Minister, is «to count on associations for fundamental issues: from the establishment of memory sites, contributions that associations understand are essential in this matter.» That is why, she added, «we want organizations to submit their candidatures; they have ten positions in the Memory Council and we hope there will be even more candidatures, but in any case, they have a significant number of representation.»
Once the deadline is open, they will have twenty days to formalize their candidature. The criteria will be published along with the opening of the deadline in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias.
