Floro (PSOE) se marcha con la sensación del deber cumplido.

«I will continue to uphold socialist values because they are a part of me and represent me,» assures the current municipal spokesperson.

The spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group of Gijón, Luis Manuel Flórez ‘Floro’, who announced this past Wednesday that he will resign his council seat at the City Council «for personal reasons» in the next month, has stated that he will continue to defend the values that led him to run for Mayor with the PSOE in 2023.

«I leave with a sense of peace knowing that I have fulfilled my duties to the best of my abilities,» he stated at a press conference at the Gijón City Hall, where he was supported not only by his fellow municipal group members but also by the deputy general secretary of the Gijón PSOE, Begoña Fernández, who is also a former councilor in Gijón.

«It has been a very important experience in my life, as serving Gijón is the greatest thing that could have happened to me, especially doing it from the Socialist Municipal Group,» he emphasized.

«I will continue to uphold socialist values because they are a part of me and represent me, and I will continue to work for those values whether or not I am a councilor,» he pointed out.

Floro highlighted that the local Socialist Association project he joined in 2022 is now consolidated with the approval of his management at the last Municipal Assembly and the re-election of the general secretary, Monchu García.

At the same time, he noted that both the Executive Committee, led by García, and himself are dedicated to working towards winning the Mayor’s office in Gijón, to make it a city «of opportunities and hope» once again.

«This time, being on the front lines, has helped me grow and mature as a person, to understand myself a little more and discover my limits and strengths,» he confessed.

«I have felt at times the insecurity that comes from inexperience, and at other times, the power of transformative and committed speech, and certainly, my ear has become more attuned to the needs of our neighbors, because Gijón is built from the micro to the macro, and vice versa,» he added.

Floro also expressed his concern about not seeing, in his opinion, an improvement in people’s lives. «It surprises me that this Government and this mayor always prefer confrontation over dialogue, even though we are a city of harmony,» he lamented.

He also emphasized that being a spokesperson has been an «intense and very rewarding» experience. «They say that in politics you don’t make friends, but in my case, I come out with a full backpack,» he rejoiced.

He also wanted to thank the reception he received from the PSOE, especially the local socialist general secretary, as well as the media.

Fernández, on her part, stressed that the PSOE understands Floro’s decision, thanking him «very, very firmly» for his dedication to the City Council over the years.

She also highlighted that over the past two years, he has allowed the municipal group to carry out a «very intense» work with the city’s citizen movement.

«We want to have that capacity for dialogue and we also want to have that citizen instinct that Floro often demonstrates to us,» she said, adding that the local party’s Executive Committee hopes to continue working with him for a city that is truly committed to the needs of its citizens.
