Racing de Santander took advantage of LaLiga Hypermotion’s matchday 37 with their 2-1 victory over Deportivo de La Coruña to tie with the direct promotion zone, following the draw of leader Elche on Saturday and Levante’s defeat, second.
The Cantabrian team knew they had to win and take advantage of the open door to the direct ticket to La Liga, and they came out strong at El Sardinero. Goals from Javier Castro and Jon Karrikaburu gave them a good lead that they managed well against Deportivo’s reaction in the second half.
The Galicians cut the deficit too late and saw their unbeaten streak of nine games come to an end, as they had hoped for more than just a mid-table finish. Racing, with 66 points, tied with Levante and positioned themselves two points behind Elche. Also at the top, the matchday saw Huesca draw 1-1 against Real Zaragoza, a result that was not enough for either team at La Romareda.
The visitors are now outside the ‘Top 6’, while Gabi’s team is just two points above the relegation zone, fighting for survival. The threat of relegation seems imminent for a Tenerife team once again frustrated with the referees, following a 1-1 draw with Eibar, who despite being unbeaten in ten games, still can’t distance themselves from the red zone.
Meanwhile, Málaga breathed a sigh of relief in a direct duel with Castellón, both now on 46 points, six points above the relegation zone, thanks to a goal from Chupete in the first half and their ability to endure.
