The Raíces project promotes responsible fashion from Avilés, merging tradition and sustainability.
On April 26, 2025
From May 1 to July 31, creative proposals can be submitted to the Instagram profile @raices.asturias for the international REMADE competition.
The Raíces Project is born with the mission of transforming fashion towards sustainability and circular creativity, rescuing and merging traditional textile techniques with a contemporary design vision. This proposal aims to revalue artisanal knowledge and promote a significant change in the fashion industry.
It was presented this morning by the Councilor for Culture and Festivals, Yolanda Alonso, accompanied by designer Virginia Abzueta; Anabel Barrio, director of the Cultural Factory; and Asturian designer María Cortina, who won the REFASHION CHALLENGE award last year and will share her personal experience in creating sustainable fashion.
This project has two fundamental pillars: education and creation. In its educational aspect, five workshops will be held at the Cultural Factory led by fashion experts. There will be a fashion design projects workshop that will promote upcycling to create garments with added value; an embroidery workshop; another on garment construction techniques where innovative and sustainable patterns inspired by tradition will be created; a materials and textiles workshop where participants will learn traditional techniques from around the world and their reinterpretation in the present day; and a textile printing workshop.
In its creative aspect, the call for the international REMADE competition will open on May 1, inviting creatives from around the world to create and present innovative designs based on sustainability and recycling. Proposals must be sent to the Instagram profile of the Raíces Project, @raices.asturias. The deadline is open until July 31, and the 20 selected designs will be officially presented from September 17 to 21 during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid.
Raíces aims to generate a cultural, economic, and educational impact in Avilés, becoming a meeting point between the past and future of fashion. More than a local project, it is an internationally projected platform inviting designers, artisans, creatives, and enthusiasts of sustainable fashion worldwide to join a global conversation about the recovery of traditional crafts and innovation with a focus on responsibility and sustainability.
