El Principado deberá indemnizar con 83.600 euros a mujer de Cangas del Narcea por ataque de oso.

After four years of legal battle, the justice system has recognized the responsibility of the Principado de Asturias administration in the attack suffered by Carmen Suárez Cabezas by a bear on May 30, 2021, in Sonande, Cangas del Narcea. The Superior Court of Justice of Asturias (TSJA) has sentenced the Principado to compensate Suárez with 83,600.77 euros.

The sentence, notified on April 11, 2025, establishes that the regional administration did not take the necessary measures to prevent the attack, despite being aware of the existing risk in the area.

The incident took place in the parish of Sonande, in the municipality of Cangas del Narcea at the end of May 2021, when Carmen went out for a walk, as she did every day. There, a bear attacked her, causing lacerations on her face and breaking her hip.

According to the judicial text, the compensation aims to cover the damages suffered by Suárez, which include 117 days of temporary injuries (104 days of moderate harm and 13 days of severe harm), permanent sequels (nasal breathing alteration, loss of a premolar, and total hip prosthesis), moderate aesthetic damage, and medical and pharmaceutical expenses.

Carmen Suárez’s legal representation, led by lawyer Juan Ramón Campo, has announced that they will request a correction to the sentence due to an arithmetic error, as the originally claimed amount was 84,494.27 euros.

This past Sunday, Campo explained and lamented that «during the course of the lengthy procedure, Carmen Suárez had to endure written responses from members of the Asturias Bear Patrol stating that it was not foreseeable to encounter a bear in the Cangas del Narcea area and that one could defend oneself from its attack in different ways.»

The victim’s representative believes that «a compensation of 83,600.77 euros cannot cover up the attitude of an administration that values people less than livestock.»
