El piloto sale ileso del helicóptero caído en embalse de Asturias

Un helicopter from the Emergency Service of the Principality of Asturias has fallen into the Tanes reservoir in Caso. According to the SEPA, the pilot, the only occupant of the aircraft, managed to get out of the reservoir on his own.

The incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. this Friday, as reported in a press release by the SEPA. The helicopter was working on putting out a forest fire in Sobrescobio, above the route of Alba, and at the time of the accident, it was loading water from the reservoir.

Medical teams in ambulances have been dispatched to the area, transferring the pilot to Valle del Nalón Hospital, along with the SEPA’s air medical rescue group and firefighters from the San Martín del Rey Aurelio station.

The Minister of Mobility, the Environment, and Emergency Management, Alejandro Calvo, also arrived at the scene, stating in statements to TPA collected by Europa Press that the helicopter crashed into the reservoir after colliding with high voltage cables, causing a power outage and loss of mobile coverage in the surrounding municipalities. However, Calvo mentioned that the power supply has already been restored.

HIGHLIGHTS THE «SKILL» OF THE PILOT

Calvo emphasized that once the water bag used for firefighting got tangled in the cables, the pilot «had the skill to make a controlled water landing and save his life, which is the most important thing.» The minister highlighted that the aircraft will be recovered on Saturday.

Furthermore, Tanes reservoir is one of the sources of drinking water for the area, so, following the existing protocols, the stability of the area has been ensured «in case of any spillage to prevent it from entering the network.»
