El Museo del Traje brings the exhibition ‘Al abrigo del Jardín’ to Gijón,

The Atlantic Botanic Garden of Gijón starts this Thursday the celebration of its 22nd anniversary with a diverse program that will run until next Sunday, combining nature, art, fashion, music, and literature.

Thus, the conference ‘Dressing a garden: the representation of nature in fashion between the Baroque and the Enlightenment’, by Gema Batanero López, curator of the Museo del Traje, at 19:00 this Thursday, in the old School of Commerce, will kick off the activities. The talk will be free of charge until full capacity is reached.

Organized by the Museo del Traje, the exhibition ‘Al abrigo del Jardín’ will open this Saturday, an adaptation of the exhibition ‘Dressing a garden’ from 2024. The show offers a botanical reading of historical fashion and has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of its curator, Gema Batanero.

There will also be special guided tours of the exhibition, at 12:00 and 17:00, with a commented tour of the exhibition and the species of the Botanic Garden, represented in textiles from the 18th and 19th centuries. The approximate duration is 90 minutes.

On the same day, between 12:00 and 14:00, the workshop ‘A garden in textiles’ will be held, aimed at adults. An introduction to textile art and painting on fabric will be given, exploring basic sewing, embroidery, and painting techniques inspired by the garden plants. The activity will be led by Verónica G. Ardura and Susana Viña.

Furthermore, there will be several sessions of children’s theater, with the play ‘From the garden to the needle’ by Teatro Factoría Norte. It tells the story of Lana and her family memories through her grandmother’s sewing box and the seeds of grandfather Zacarías. The duration is 20 minutes.

In the afternoon, from 17:00 to 19:00, María Cayado will lead the workshop ‘Dressing flowers’, also for adults, teaching how to use flowers and plant elements to create textile ornaments and headdresses.

To end the day, at 19:00, the concert ‘Harmonic Nature’ by the Arpeggio Quartet will take place. A program that combines baroque music, soundtracks, and popular themes inspired by nature and flowers. The performers are: Sofía Trueba Fraile (cello), Adrián Arechavala Díez (viola), Iria Rodríguez González, and Jorge Díaz Seijo (violins).

As a closing to the schedule, this Sunday, from 11:00 to 19:00, ‘Tulips for Parkinson’s’ will be held, a solidarity activity organized by the Jovellanos Parkinson Association. In this case, tulips will be distributed to the public to raise awareness about the disease, as the red tulip has been its international symbol since the 19th century.

Between 12:00 and 13:30, there will also be a ‘Poetic Reading: Ida Vitale’, where the Poetic Group Encadenados pays tribute to the Uruguayan poet, Cervantes Prize 2018, in the Poetry Corner of the Garden.

On Sunday, there will be a repetition of the special guided tours of the exhibition, the workshop ‘A garden in textiles’, and the children’s theater.

All activities, except for the workshops, are free of charge. Some require prior registration through the official website of the Botanic Garden.
