On June 2, 2025, the healthcare center continues to receive excellent ratings for the treatment in all its departments from patients. A meeting of the board of the Avilés Hospital Foundation, chaired by Mariví Monteserin and with the manager, Antonio Molejón, was held. In 2024, the Avilés Hospital performed 3,478 surgical interventions, a 14% decrease from the previous year due to a month-long halt in activity for surgical area renovations.
The hospital’s most significant surgical activity in 2024 was in plastic surgery with 1,595 interventions, followed by ophthalmology with 1,306 interventions. These figures were above the initial agreement with the Asturian Health Service (SESPA). The vast majority of the hospital’s activities are contracted with SESPA.
The Geriatrics department had 1,109 admissions in 2024 compared to 1,149 in 2023, with peak months in April and October. The average stay was 13.62 days, with an average patient age of 82. The most common reason for admission in geriatrics was rehabilitation, followed by neurological diseases.
Consultations at the Avilés Hospital generated the most patient traffic in 2024, with 17,776 visits, mostly related to surgical processes. The most frequent consultation specialties were cataracts, allergies, visual acuity, and plastic surgery.
In 2024, the hospital conducted 14,462 diagnostic tests, with 7,419 being breast cancer screenings under a unique agreement with SESPA. The rehabilitation area supported geriatric care by focusing on physiotherapy sessions for elderly patients.
The Avilés Hospital has a psychosocial care team through an agreement with the Geriatrics and Gerontology Society of Asturias. They provide comprehensive care for advanced disease patients, contributing to their quality of life and emotional support for patients, families, and clinical professionals. In 2024, the team carried out 1,310 interventions, with 731 for patients and 579 for family members.
Patient Evaluation:
In 2024, the Avilés Hospital continued its commitment to quality healthcare, service excellence, and compassionate care for patients. Patient feedback was positive across all clinical units: Hospitalization, Day Surgery, Diagnostic Tests, and Consultations. Results in 2024 exceeded those of 2023 in all categories.
Improvements:
The hospital continued to make improvements in accessibility and infrastructure in 2024. Refurbishment of all hospital bathrooms included antibacterial and anti-slip floors, grab bars, adapted furniture, improved lighting, and signaling. The future Therapeutic Garden project aims to enhance patient care and rehabilitation.
New signage was installed inside and outside the hospital, and patient flow in the Day Surgery area was improved through staff wardrobe renovations and redesigned patient areas.
A new ophthalmic nursing consultation was set up in 2024 to streamline appointment scheduling and reduce waiting times.
Financial Management:
In 2024, expenses exceeded income due to reduced activity from renovations. Revenues were €9,476,526, and expenses were €9,779,297, resulting in a deficit of €302,771. This was an exceptional occurrence for the hospital, which had consistently positive results in previous years, except during the pandemic. However, the surplus from 2023 and 2022, at €790,000 each year, compensated for this deficit.
The hospital’s managing director, Antonio Molejón, emphasized that despite a 3.19% deficit in income, the surpluses of over 7.5% in previous years offset this and were not a cause for concern, attributing it mainly to a temporary decrease in activity.
The Avilés Hospital has been recognized for its commitment to humanizing healthcare, winning the People’s Choice Award at the II Humanization Conference of Asturias for the «Work Climate, a Job for All» initiative. This led to identifying strengths like pride and belonging, as well as areas for improvement, resulting in the creation of working groups and tailored training plans.
The hospital has also enhanced the training of nursing and nursing assistant students, collaborating closely with universities and vocational training centers. In 2024, the hospital contributed to the training of 11 medical residents, 8 nursing professionals, 2 physiotherapists, and eleven vocational students in various specialties.
Furthermore, the foundation participated in projects focused on improving care quality, such as the «Sumamos Excelencia» project by the Carlos III Health Institute and «Flebitis Zero.»
Molejón concluded by stating that the most fulfilling aspect for the hospital is the satisfaction of its users, who rely on them for healthcare and well-being. Throughout 2024, they maintained high standards of quality and service, reflected in the high satisfaction levels of patients and their families.
