The solidarity run for the Sahrawi people, organized by schools with the collaboration of the Avilés City Council, in its eighth edition, will take place on Sunday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Yago Lamela Municipal Stadium. To participate in the event, registration with a donation of two euros per bib (or more if desired) is required. Registration for the general public can be done starting from 9:30 a.m. at the stadium on the day of the event. Participation is open to people of all ages.
Registrations can also be made at the Avilés schools twinned with Sahrawi schools, including students, teachers, and families. This registration method is not valid for individuals not associated with these schools.
This morning, the run was presented by the Councilor for Education, Juan Carlos Guerrero, accompanied by the Councilor for Cooperation, Agustín Medina. The presentation also marked the start of the school supply collection campaign for the students in the Tinduf schools in the Sahara, which can be deposited at Casa de Cultura, Factoría Cultural, and Complejo Deportivo Avilés.
Also present at the presentation were Begoña González, President of the Local Assembly of Cruz Roja Avilés, and Berta López, Vice President, along with Hugo García Álvarez, representing the Association for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People in the Region.
The Solidarity Run strengthens the school twinning with the Sahrawi people and will feature entertainment, including participation from the young people of the Municipal Youth Theater Workshop.
The funds raised will be used to purchase supplies for the educational centers in the camps located in the Algerian desert, including school, office, and consumable products.
Avilés twinned with the Wilaya of El Aaiún in 1995, located in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tinduf, Algeria, and has been collaborating on development cooperation projects through the Asturian Association for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People.
With the support of the Municipal Education and Citizen Participation services, seven public schools in Avilés were twinned with schools in the camps in the 2009/2010 school year. This solidarity initiative, winner of the National Award for Education for Development Vicente Ferrer 2014, now includes 14 schools in Avilés (the three Municipal Infant Education Schools, seven Infant and Primary Education centers, one Special Education center, and three Concerted Centers), as well as another school from Castrillón.
Last year, 1,300 people participated in the solidarity run, raising €4,461.60 from bib sales and voluntary contributions.
