The book club ‘Una habitación propia’ meets this afternoon to commemorate Book Day with the reading of texts by Ana María Matute and Carmen Martín Gaite, in the year that marks their centenary.

The meeting is this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Casa de las Mujeres in Avilés. Being two of the most emblematic voices in Spanish literature in the second half of the 20th century, they were able to capture the complexities of the human soul.

In Matute’s work, the fantastic is intertwined with the social, while in Martín Gaite’s work, identity, language, and memory are explored. Translated into more than ten languages, both authors were recognized with the National Narrative Prize: Ana María Matute for ‘Los hijos muertos’ and Carmen Martín Gaite for ‘El cuarto de atrás’.

Throughout their careers, they received numerous awards. Matute was awarded the Cervantes Prize in 2010 and became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy in 1988. Martín Gaite, on the other hand, was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature in 1988, thus consolidating a prominent place in Spanish-language literature.
