February 10, 2025

This morning, at an institutional event at the National Museum of Reina Sofía Art.

Mariví Monteserín, the Mayor of Avilés, received the medal this morning to promote the values of equality, at an institutional event commemorating the 20 years since the approval of Organic Law 1/2004, of December 28, on measures for the comprehensive protection against gender violence (Lovg). The ceremony took place at the National Museum Reina Sofía in Madrid.

An award given to the mayor, who was instrumental in the drafting of the law that turned 20 on December 28 (as a member of the Spanish parliament), in recognition of her invaluable contribution to the law, which represented one of our major milestones and a turning point in terms of equality and rights.

Lovg has marked a before and after in the fight against gender violence, making it a state problem that challenges society as a whole. The law thus responded to the urgent social demand to act forcefully to eradicate this violence, which is the cruel expression of the inequality between women and men.

The law, supported by representatives of public authorities, the media, civil society organizations, and other personalities, became a tribute to those who, like Mariví Monteserín, played a decisive role in the drafting, processing, and approval of the law.

In the words of the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo: «On behalf of the government and on her own, let me fight against gender violence and in favor of equality, a core value of our constitution and democracy.»
