The National Music Diffusion Center (CNDM, Inaost Unit, Ministry of Culture) and the Municipal Culture Foundation of the City of Oviedo promote the Second This enrollment was presented in co-production at the Campoamor Theater. David Álvarez, Minister of Culture and President of the Municipal Culture Foundation; Francisco Lorenzo, Director of CNDM, and Marina Cosme, Artistic Director of the Musical Foundation of the City of Oviedo and Coordinator of the Cycle. The new edition of Baroque Spring will feature six concerts that will take place at the Prince Felipe Auditorium from March 4th to May 22nd, 2025. Through foreign groups and artists, the Asturian public will have the opportunity to delve into masterpieces of the Baroque period, with forays into earlier times. In parallel and as part of the educational activities of the CNDM, a cycle of conferences will be organized with some of the artists from the cycle in collaboration with the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Principality of Asturias, the Professional Conservatory of Music in Oviedo, and the University of Oviedo. Minister of Culture, David Álvarez, specified that «this cycle comes to add not only to our musical and cultural capital. As you know, one of our strengths is our classical and lyrical music programming, a well-known power not only in national circuits but also internationally. This was further supported this week with another historic event for our programming, like the Royal Concert in Amsterdam with upcoming titles in 2027, Klaus Mäkelä and Janine Jansen, a historic milestone to continue consolidating this musical capital, a fundamental ingredient for our candidacy for the European Capital of Culture in 2031.» Director of CNDM, Francisco Lorenzo, added: «This cycle has become a great case to showcase publicly forgotten musical gems that we recover through modern premieres, at the hands of national and international artists of the highest caliber.» He also emphasized, «Artists who will visit Baroque Spring this year. We will welcome great phenomena of the moment, such as the soprano Samuel Mariñ.» He thanked the local council, the Municipal Culture Foundation, as well as the Conservatory and the University of Oviedo, «with whom we have developed all the educational part of the good work and who will be present today,» not forgetting «the Asturian audience for their trust and support for the current edition.» Artistic director of the Musical Foundation in the city of Oviedo, Cosme Marina, described this 12th edition as «great news,» demonstrating «continuity, public attachment, and institutional commitment between the Local Council of Oviedo, the National Music Diffusion Center, and various institutions involved. He also stated, «We have sold more fertilizers than ever before, and due to the impetus of the local council, the Municipal Culture Foundation and its president, and Francisco Lorenzo, we have expanded and nearly doubled the jazz activity that we are going to have at the Festival in two blocks, one that is already on sale with the first four concerts and three that will run throughout the spring, I think until the end of May.» Regarding how Oviedo is preparing for the European Capital of Culture 2031, Marina emphasized that «if something characterizes European identity, it is music and the musical circuits that integrate it, and this can be seen from the Middle Ages. That is, the continuous coming and going of musicians, composers, and artists from all countries of what is now the European Union is undoubtedly one of the distinctive international elements of our culture. This cycle of historical music with chamber ensembles is a good example of what a cultural capital should be in terms of integrating repertoires, artists from different countries, and a strong commitment to further recovery. Oviedo University,» and particularly, he expressed satisfaction with «the work and dedication of Professor Ramón Sobrino, who has been closely collaborating in an unpaid and intense way in the conferences that will take place before.» The twelfth edition will bring to life dozens of some of the most important authors of the 17th and 18th centuries. The compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, or George Frideric Handel will be accompanied by the works of Francisco Hernández Illana, Diego Péz en Camino, or the composer Elisabeth Jacquet. Additionally, this year will pay special attention to Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, whose fifth centenary of birth is being celebrated. During this time, the CNDM has scheduled the transversal cycle #Palestrina.500, which will be used in Oviedo to pay tribute to one of the greatest exponents of Renaissance polyphonic repertoire, whose music had a great influence on our country and on Spanish composers like Tomás Luis de Victoria. This cycle is part of the CNDM circuit program, the activities promoted by that institution throughout the territory, with the aim of structuring our country and providing visibility to the Spanish musical heritage. Along with the Baroque Spring cycle and through the CNDM circuits, the Oviedo Jazz cycle is also celebrated in Asturias, with tickets already on sale. A window of musical richness from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Baroque Spring cycle will begin on Tuesday, March 4th, with one of the most internationally acclaimed Spanish musicians: Diego Ares. Becoming one of the most sought-after names in the field, he returns to Oviedo after his successful concert last season, performing one of the essential works in music history: the famous Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, by Johann Sebastian Bach. Ares will offer his particular version of this monumental score, considered one of the pinnacle works that was ever written. The tour will continue on Sunday, March 23rd, with Music Alchemicica, a group led by violinist Lina Tur Bonet, one of the most renowned musical artists in international stages for her virtuosity and stage energy. The group will perform works by two of the greatest Baroque composers: Johann Sebastian Bach, with his Violin Concerto in A Minor, BWV 1041, and Antonio Vivaldi with the Verità Overture, RV 739, as well as three other concertos for cello, cello, and violin. Alberto Migélez Rouco, an artist in residence at CNDM this season, will perform as a singer with Guirlands, under the direction of Luis Martínez Pueyo. Rouco, in addition to being one of the most powerful voices in the new generations in this field, has one of the most charismatic voices in the current panorama as a countertenor and is sought after by prestigious conductors such as William Christie, René Jacobs, Christophe Rousset, or Leonardo García-Alarcón, among others. The concert, which will take place on Tuesday, April 1st, is entitled «Lover’s Remorse» and brings together the singing and contritions of Francisco Hernández Illana and Diego Pérez, with several historical recoveries that are being premiered in modern times. On Monday, April 28th, it will be the turn of the Parisian Ensemble Nevermind, led by the charismatic harpsichordist Jean Rondeau and composed of artists from the new generation of musicians who have managed to renew the world of early music. This group, making its debut in the cycle, will celebrate the figure of the great Baroque composer Elisabeth Jacquet de Guerre, a member of the cultural circle of the court of Louis XIV, whose works will be shared with pieces by François Couperin, Jacques-Martin Hotteterre, and Michel Pignolet. Another debut in the cycle will be the performance on Monday, May 12th, by the sopranist Samuel Mariño, one of the vocal phenomena of the moment and an artist with a meteoric career. Along with the Concerto de ‘Cavalieri, he will perform Amoroso Delirio, a program that brings together well-known and beautiful arias by significant composers such as George Frideric Handel, Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Vivaldi, Nicola Porpora, or Alessandro Stradella. The closing of the cycle will take place on Thursday, May 22nd, with two significant names in the history of music, Orlando di Lasso and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. The international commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Palestrina’s death will reach Oviedo through Vox Luminis, one of the best vocal groups of our time. The concert will include Lieremiae Profetae lamentae by Di Lasso, as well as the famous Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina, his best-known work and one of the great polyphonic works of all time.
