Avilés promotes its Holy Week on the public television of Castilla y León and at the AVE stations in Madrid in the first edition where there are High-Speed trains and direct connections by AVE between Madrid and the town.

Through the Tourism department, the Avilés City Council has installed mupis with advertisement posters at Chamartín and Atocha stations (Madrid) and has contracted spaces on the regional television of Castilla y León for the broadcast of a promotional video.

These are the main advertising actions to promote as a «destination with great appeal» the tourist offer of these days. The Holy Week processions, from April 13 to 20, starting on Palm Sunday (April 13), are part of a week declared of tourist interest and complemented with numerous proposals ranging from culture to leisure, including gastronomy.

Easter Monday is «unique» in Spain with the traditional ‘street food’ that brings together tens of thousands of people of all ages in the main streets of the city to enjoy the traditional ‘bollo’.

«DEEP HISTORICAL ROOTS»

The Holy Week of Avilés is a celebration with «a deep historical and cultural roots«, declared a Tourist Interest Festival since 2003. Its processions, which have been continuous since 1948, are inspired by a tradition dating back to the 17th century, when brotherhoods already existed in the town.

Eight brotherhoods are responsible for organizing this event, bringing together more than a thousand participants who bring the Passion to life with ten processions throughout the week. During these days, 23 floats and 16 processional images can be seen parading through the city streets in an atmosphere of reflection and devotion.

The ‘street food’ will be the highlight of a float parade on Easter Monday of the El Bollo Festivities, which, for the first time this year, will take place on the morning of Monday the 21st, as one of the great novelties of the celebrations. It will start at 12:00 on La Exposición Avenue, passing through Francisco Orejas Sierra Street, José Cueto Street, La Merced Square, Pedro Menéndez Street and Square, and ending on Emile Robin Street.

«A SHORT AVE RIDE AWAY»

The City Council has highlighted that the implementation of high-speed trains «brings Avilés even closer» as a tourist destination, so the Tourism Service is focusing on markets that are «a short AVE ride away» and are traditional visitor markets, such as León and other provinces of the plateau.

In Madrid, Renfe supports will be used to promote the Holy Week of Avilés according to an agreement signed by the City Council. The Holy Week in Avilés is also promoted on social media through @turismoavilescomarca, detailing the activities.
