In the second decade of the 20th century, Federico Rehberger Kreigs arrives in Oviedo from Weinheim. He quickly becomes part of the city’s life, joins the Philharmonic Society, and plays for the Real Stadium Club Ovetense (one of the teams that were part of Real Oviedo). He is a dental surgeon and, in 1920, he establishes his practice on Altamirano Street. Gradually, he falls in love with Oviedo and also with a woman from Oviedo: Pilar Menéndez. Thus, a lineage of doctors is born, which, four generations and 105 years later, still remains in the city. His son, his grandson, and now his great-grandson.
During the inauguration of Avenida Dres. Rehberger, the third generation, Dr. Guillermo Rehberger Olivera, recalled this story. From now on, the connecting road from Río Caudal Street to the new roundabout in front of the Palacio de los Deportes will bear the name of this family of doctors. This is a stretch that also bore this name until the demolition of the Ángel Cañedo bridge.
Guillermo Rehberger Menéndez, a stomatologist and founding member of the Spanish Societies of Periodontology, Implantology, Orthodontics, and Stomatological Prosthesis, and a pioneer of the Stomatological School of Oviedo, was also remembered by Rehberger Olivera. Guillermo Rehberger Olivera expressed his emotions, saying, «To have a street in Oviedo named ‘Doctores Rehberger’ is unthinkable,» and added, «I have to thank many people for this, but especially the municipal Corporation and Dr. López Arranz, who was the promoter of this idea.»
The Mayor stated, «Oviedo fulfills a pleasant duty today by recognizing the merits of this family lineage.» Alfredo Canteli also thanked them for «always remaining faithful to Oviedo, where you are a beloved family.» He wished them to «continue making a better Oviedo.»
Also present at the event was Dr. Federico Rehberger Bescós, the fourth generation of the lineage, along with other family members, members of the municipal corporation, and representatives from the medical, social, and sports sectors of Oviedo.
Attached are the audio recordings of the words spoken this morning by the Mayor, Alfredo Canteli, and by Dr. Guillermo Rehberger Olivera on behalf of the family.
