On July 2, 2025, the city of Avilés took a significant step towards sustainability by launching the Komtainer app. This application allows citizens to manage all aspects of recycling and waste collection in the municipality directly from their mobile phones. From accessing the clean point to requesting bulky item collection, Komtainer aims to make recycling easier and more efficient for the residents of Avilés.
During the presentation of the app, the Councilor of Urban Services and Environment, Pelayo García, emphasized that Komtainer is designed to simplify the lives of citizens and help them contribute to environmental conservation. The app will provide features such as opening containers with a mobile phone, checking collection schedules, accessing services like clean points, requesting special furniture pickups, reporting issues like full or damaged containers, and tracking organic waste contributions to promote recycling.
The Avilés City Council plans to make the app available for download in the coming weeks, coinciding with the closure of organic waste containers scheduled for September 1. Currently, the organic waste containers operate with magnetic cards, but they will transition to the use of the Komtainer app. Users can obtain the app by scanning a QR code provided on the containers and the municipal website.
In the future, regular use of the app and organic waste containers may lead to incentives such as waste fee discounts for environmentally conscious citizens. The Councilor of Urban Services also highlighted the progress made in waste reduction and selective collection in 2024, with a significant increase in organic waste collection. However, there is still room for improvement, especially in increasing the separate collection of organic waste to meet the city’s recycling goals.
The Avilés City Council continues its environmental awareness campaigns, including educational talks with neighborhood associations, distribution of brown waste containers, and biodegradable bags to promote responsible waste management. Despite the achievements so far, there is a collective effort needed to further enhance recycling practices and achieve sustainable waste management goals in Avilés.
