Avilés promotes the creation of a Local Youth Council in an informative meeting with the city’s associative fabric
24 Mar. 2025
The Avilés City Council aims to give a voice to youth associations with the establishment of a Local Youth Council. This Friday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m., an initial informative meeting will take place at the Youth Space of the Fuero Building with groups, entities, and individuals interested in this initiative.
During this first meeting, attended by the Youth Councilor, Raquel Ruiz, along with representatives from the Youth Council of the Principality of Asturias, the draft Regulation governing the Council’s operation will be presented.
The purpose of the Youth Council is to promote the participation, representation, and consultation of youth, aged between 14 and 30, in the political, social, economic, and cultural development of the city. Any youth association, youth section of any other type of association, or an informal group of young people can be part of it, although the latter will have a voice but no vote.
The main functions of the Youth Council include:
– Encouraging young people to engage in youth associations as a valid way to collectively address issues that affect them, proposing solutions and alternatives.
– Representing its members in governmental bodies and activities.
– Promoting activities aimed at ensuring the participation of young people in decisions and measures that affect them.
– Participating in committees and bodies dealing with youth issues, with the aim of improving the quality of life of young people in Asturias.
In this regard, Avilés has had the Childhood and Adolescence Council since 2010, an advisory and participatory body that gives a voice to children and adolescents, aged 13 to 17, in municipal affairs. This represents a valuable tool in the educational process and the promotion of Children’s Rights.
