Acuerdo del Foro por la Industria para reformular estrategia y garantizar futuro industrial

The Government of Asturias and the social and economic agents have agreed this Monday to reformulate the industrial strategy and work on proposals that guarantee the future of a key sector for the community. The agreement was reached during a meeting of the Forum for Industry chaired by the Minister of Ecological Transition, Industry, and Commerce, Belarmina Díaz. This is the advisory body in which the Principality, UGT, Comisiones Obreras, and the Asturian Federation of Businessmen (Fade) are represented.

The minister has indicated that it is «very important to address, officially and formally, the situation of the industry in general, of the steel industry in particular, and also of steel.»

«We must decide how to rebuild and improve our strategy, which necessarily must be aligned with the Industry and Strategic Autonomy Law being processed in Madrid and with the Clean Industrial Pact presented by Brussels,» explained the minister.

In this sense, Belarmina Díaz has announced that next week the work will begin to review this strategy through the creation of a working group coordinated by Juan Carlos Aguilera, former Director General of Industry and currently of the Asturian Energy Foundation (Faen).

According to the Asturian Government’s statement after the meeting, the Forum for Industry has evaluated the impact of the pact designed by the European Commission, which will serve as a roadmap for the sector in the coming years. The Minister of Ecological Transition will travel to Brussels in the coming days to learn more details about this document and to once again demand specific support measures for the steel industry from the EU institutions.

«Right now, our priority is to find the tools we can use to defend the Asturian industry. We are open to all possibilities and we believe that the dialogue we maintain in this forum should serve to lay the groundwork and move towards something more,» said the Industry Minister.

Another agreement reached at the meeting is to start drafting an institutional declaration of support for the secondary sector or the promotion of a regional pact for industry, with the aim of being able to convey it to the entire Asturian society to achieve broad social and political consensus.

Díaz has also stressed the need to ensure «competitive, stable, and quality» energy that guarantees supply for the industrial sector.
