The Principality will start the second phase of improvements at the station in the coming months, aimed at attracting visitors outside the winter season and making the facility more sustainable.
The Minister of Culture, Language Policy, and Sports, Vanessa Gutiérrez, announced today an investment of 750,000 euros in the Valgrande-Pajares Winter and Mountain Station to promote de-seasonalization and attract visitors to the Lenense facility throughout the year. The initial work will begin at the end of this year.
«Valgrande-Pajares, since its opening more than seventy years ago, has been a driving force for the region, and it is a priority for this government to adapt it so that it can be enjoyed in the summer with a variety of outdoor activities, while still being a reference station for winter sports,» explained the Minister of Culture.
With this goal in mind, an ambitious action plan was developed, which began with an investment of nearly ten million euros in the cable car, inaugurated at the end of 2022, and now continues with the first actions of the second phase. These interventions will involve an expenditure of 750,000 euros to expand the station’s offerings, modernize it, and make it an example of diversification and sustainable development.
«This investment will allow for the development of key projects to modernize the station and diversify its offerings beyond the snow season, with improvements in infrastructure, accessibility, and activity programming to make the facility an attractive destination year-round,» the Minister pointed out.
Among the main planned actions are:
– The design of a bike park integrated into the natural environment.
– The adaptation and improvement of access to facilitate the arrival of all individuals.
– The renaturalization of green areas and landscape recovery.
– The reinforcement of the network of trails and mountain bike paths.
– The creation of accessible routes and new panoramic viewpoints.
– The design and creation of a cross-country ski trail that will expand the station’s sports possibilities.
Some of these actions will begin this autumn, respecting summer activities and the snow season. The execution will be completed by 2026.
«Veranu en Payares»
The Minister’s visit coincided with the celebration of the first Mountain Festival at the Lenense complex, an event that combines culture, nature, and sports activities in a high-mountain environment. This event is part of the summer reactivation strategy of the facility and the «Veranu en Payares» program. It also forms part of the «ADN, Asturies, Deporte y Naturaleza» project, through which Asturias has been recognized as the European Region of Sport in 2025.
With this second phase of actions, the Principality consolidates the Valgrande-Pajares station as a more open, accessible, and in line with the demands of nature tourism, outdoor sports, and sustainability, thus strengthening its role as a unique destination in the northern Iberian Peninsula.
