The new advisor, who has extensive experience in government affairs, will take office next Monday with the mandate of keeping channels of dialogue open with trade unions and the entire educational community. The President of the Principality of Asturias, Adrián Barbón, has chosen Eva Ledo to lead the new stage of the Ministry of Education and implement all the commitments outlined in the pre-agreement reached with trade unions to strengthen the public education system. The new Minister of Education will take office next Monday, June 16, before the meeting of the Council of Government.
In a press conference held this afternoon, Barbón praised Ledo’s government experience, thanked her for stepping forward, and entrusted her to keep the channels of dialogue open with teachers and trade unions after the pre-agreement reached on Monday, «which is a fundamental step.»
«The new advisor believes in public education in Asturias, she is highly respected and valued, and I am immensely grateful that she has accepted, as she was the only option on the table,» explained the head of government.
Eva Ledo (Avilés, 1966) is an industrial engineer specialized in Electricity. Since 1995, she has been a career civil servant in the Body of Secondary School Teachers in the specialties of Technology and Electronic Systems and Automation and has been a part of the Education Inspectors Body since 2014. She has served as Director General of Teaching Staff and Centers and the 0-3 years network, as well as President of the Asturias Council of Vocational Training.
She was previously serving as Deputy Director General of Programs and Management at the Ministry of Education and also has experience in the fields of metallurgy, computer science, and project engineering.
During his speech, the President apologized to families for the consequences of the educational conflict and praised the commitment of former Minister Lydia Espina, «who generously resigned to facilitate the search for an agreement and rebuild bridges.» He also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the negotiating teams, who have managed to reach an agreement to strengthen public education, both on the union side and on the Government of Asturias team, led by Vice President Gimena Llamedo and Minister of Finance, Justice, and European Affairs, Guillermo Peláez.
Main commitments of the pre-agreement
According to Barbón, the agreement with trade unions «marks a before and after, the beginning of the strengthening of public education in Asturias.» The document is based on three pillars: improving attention to diversity and equity, reducing bureaucracy, and improving the salary of teaching staff.
For example, over the next three academic years, 300 new specialists in Therapeutic Pedagogy and Hearing and Language will be incorporated into the system. The staffing of educational assistants and orientation specialists will also be strengthened. Additionally, throughout the legislature, the ratio of 23 students per classroom will be fully enforced in Preschool and Primary Education and will begin to be implemented in the first year of Secondary Education.
To streamline paperwork and bureaucratic procedures, the Simplify Education plan will be implemented, substitutions will be expedited to the maximum, and the provision of administrative staff in schools will be strengthened, among other measures.
Regarding salary actions, the Principality has committed to allowing teaching staff on long-term sick leave to benefit from the evaluation plan supplements. Likewise, a monthly increase of 210 euros will be applied for teachers with less than six years of work experience and 140 euros for the rest.
