From Atocha, starting at 12:30 pm under the slogan ‘Live and Protected Wolf’
Several environmental and animal rights organizations have called for a rally on June 22 to demand strict protection for the Iberian wolf and reject the «serious legal setback» approved by the Congress of Deputies by turning this species once again into a hunting target.
The rally will start at 12:30 pm from Atocha and will walk through the center of Madrid under the slogan ‘Live and Protected Wolf’ in defense of a species that is «key to the balance» of the ecosystems of the Peninsula after the Congress approved national protection for the wolf on March 20.
The rally is organized by Ecologists in Action, Grupo Lobo Asturias, or World Wildlife Fund (WWF), among others; while more than fifty civil society organizations have supported the initiative, as highlighted by the AnimaNaturalis organization in a statement.
During the march, the «serious precedent» of modifying environmental regulations «under sectorial pressure, depriving civil society of any participation» will be denounced.
«The wolf is not a pest, it is natural heritage for all,» said AnimaNaturalis director Aïda Gascón, emphasizing that their demand is that «the wolf must return to the List of Special Protection (LESRPE) and conservation plans based on science and effective coexistence programs must be implemented.»
