The municipalities of Llanes, Gijón, and Oviedo are the ones that contribute the most to tourism in Asturias as they are the councils with the highest number of tourist accommodation places, according to the second edition of the Municipal Contribution Atlas of Tourism in Spain prepared by Exceltur.
This atlas provides information at the local level on the relevance and social contribution generated by tourism in Spanish municipalities.
The municipality of Llanes, located on the eastern coast of Asturias, has 20,600 accommodation places, most of which are in apartments by keys, campsites, and rural tourism –51.5% of the total. In second place, the majority of the places in the coastal town are found in Tourist Use Housing on platforms, 34.2% of the total. Finally, hotel places account for 14.3% of the total.
In Gijón, there are 15,250 places, of which the majority, 52.3%, are Tourist Use Housing. This is followed by hotels, which represent 32.5% of the total places, and rural tourism accommodations, campsites, and apartments by keys, which make up 15.1%.
In Oviedo, there are 10,686 places, the majority of which are hotel places –51.4%. Tourist Use Housing accounts for 45.3% of the total, while rural tourism accommodations, campsites, and apartments by keys only make up 3.2% of the total.
Exceltur analyzes the situation of accommodation places in 23 Asturian municipalities. By the number of places, the classification led by Llanes, Gijón, and Oviedo continues with Cangas de Onís, Villaviciosa, Ribadesella, Cudillero, Valdés, Ribadedeva, Cabrales, Parres, Colunga, Gozón, Castrillón, Carreño, Castropol, Piloña, Onís, Tapia de Casariego, Siero, Caravia, Cangas del Narcea, and Somiedo.
GIJÓN, THE ONE THAT GENERATES THE MOST TOURISM JOBS
The analysis by the tourism association reflects that Gijón is the municipality with the most tourism jobs, with 3,623. Oviedo closely follows with 3,348 jobs, while Llanes ranks third with 1,909 jobs.
From the classification by municipalities, those that generate the fewest jobs are Caravia (57), Somiedo (58), and Castropol (107).
NATIONAL INFORMATION
Nationally, the Atlas shows a widespread advancement of tourism presence and its translation into a growth of employment linked to tourism of +19.3% from 2024 compared to 2022, in the 500 destinations included in this second edition.
The growth of tourism supply and demand is concentrated in the most consolidated municipalities, where the greatest positive effects of tourism are identified, as well as the greatest challenges in balancing tourists and residents.
The 50 municipalities with the highest tourism presence in Spain concentrate 40.9% of all market tourist accommodation supply (hotels, apartments, campsites, rural tourism, and tourist use housing).
The growth of tourist accommodation places (25.3% from 2024-2022 in the 500 municipalities) is the main determining factor of the increase in tourism pressure in the 500 municipalities, compared to the increase in hotel places (+2.0% 2024-2022) and the rest of regulated accommodation proposals (campsites, rural houses, and apart-hotels +1.4% 2024-2022).
