The Centro Cultural Internacional Oscar Niemeyer in Avilés will pay tribute to the sculptor Martín Chirino on the centenary of his birth, offering visitors the opportunity to explore his work and his contribution to the international art scene.
The exhibition, titled ‘Dear Martin,’ will be displayed in the Cúpula from June to September, curated by Alfonso de la Torre, focusing on the years Martín Chirino spent in the United States.
This exhibition is part of a series of events planned throughout 2025 celebrating the life and work of the iron forger. The exhibition is supported by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).
The Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino Foundation commemorates the centenary of the sculptor Martín Chirino’s birth (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, March 1, 1925 – Madrid, March 11, 2019) in 2025 with ten exhibition projects scheduled in art centers, museums, cultural institutions, art galleries, seminars, conferences, workshops, and publications, among other events and activities, focusing on the life and work of the Gran Canarian artist.
In Avilés, sculptures with an American influence will be presented, pieces related to the ones the sculptor showcased at the MoMA in 1960 in New York, those exhibited at the Grace Borgenicht gallery, also in New York, as well as the development of some of his series during his residency and the subsequent continuation upon his return to Spain.
