On March 27, 2025, the Palacio de Valdecarzana will host the presentation of the book «La Legión Cóndor en Asturias. Antes Trubia que Gernika».
This Saturday, March 29, at 12:30 p.m., the book «La Legión Cóndor en Asturias. Antes Trubia que Gernika» will be presented in the auditorium of the Palacio de Valdecarzana by the Avilés researcher and History doctor Pablo Alcántara Pérez. The event will feature the participation of the Councilor of Democratic Memory, Ana Solís, as well as the author himself and the historian Pablo Martínez Corral, author of the book’s prologue and collaborator on the project.
The book, the result of exhaustive research, is a meticulous compilation of data and photographs aimed at offering the reader a portrait of the effects of the Nazi aviation bombings during the Civil War in various parts of Asturias, including Avilés.
As outlined in this publication, the city suffered damage to several significant buildings, such as the Town Hall, as well as properties on streets like Rivero, Gutiérrez Herrero, Palacio Valdés, or Juan Ochoa, among others. All of this was aimed at undermining the resistance that the Republican side offered in Asturias against the advance of Franco’s troops.
In addition to Avilés, the Legion Cóndor bombed other areas in the region such as Trubia, Cangas de Onís, Infiesto, Colunga, or Campo de Caso, among others. It is estimated that these attacks resulted in the deaths of at least two hundred civilians, as well as causing significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and businesses.
«La Legión Cóndor en Asturias. Antes Trubia que Gernika» is published by the Asturian Federation Memory and Republic (Famyr) and can be purchased through its website ( or by writing to famyr@memoriayrepublica.org.
«It is essential to disseminate these facts so that it is known that Nazism also killed in Asturias, in this case in service to Franco and his rebel troops against democracy,» says the Councilor of Democratic Memory, Ana Solís, who recalls that «at that time, Asturias suffered the attacks of this fascist alliance, and at this moment in history, it is more important than ever to remember it as an example of where the hate speech of the extreme right leads us.»
